He probably forgot where he's meant to go. It's an age thing you know.

Are you suggesting that the English language is some kind of fluid thing.
Surely not.

Can anyone tell me the
current
meaning of an Invitation which states "Dress - Black Tie" please?
google & Wiki seems to suggest it does not mean exactly what it says.
I want to attend wearing a regular black suit, white shirt, & tie, ideally not black. Am I going be the odd one out if I do?
Serious question, I've managed a lifetime almost free of these "stiff" evenings, but this one is not really swerve-able.
Thanks.

I would think you would be the odd one out.
Formal dinner suit and bow tie for me if I got the invite and I had to go (would like to avoid going to such a thing though)

"Formal Dinner Suit"?
Again, what does that mean? A regular Suit?
A bow-tie with a regular dark suit would be OK, yes?

i have had the misfortune of attending several of these in my time.
SOME people do wear a plain black suit, with dress shirt and bow tie - and its kinda accepted.
I often find it funny at these events that they are supposed to be another level of "smart" upwards, but you will never see more ill fitting suits in one venue!
why not hire one? and id go single breasted thin lapel - that seems to be the modern trend

This was my line, completely, but you've done me again - what is a "dress shirt" when it's at home?
I really don't think "Black Tie" is a very clear instruction.

I'd guess they don't fit properly because most people either hire one on the cheap or have their own that they bought on the cheap 15 years ago.
I'd hire one, it shouldn't cost a fortune/be much hassle and at least you won't be worrying you're in the wrong attire - thus minimising the awfulness of the evening.
