yup tux + bow tie.  no handbag.  don't forget to post a pic.

If I go, the ManBag goes.

Bet that's a query rarely seen before - can "Black Tie" evening include a Manbag. I feel naked without it these days.

Proving my point precisely - if you absent the frilly ruffles, it's a regular M & S white shirt.

you should probably invest in a nice clutch bag for such occassions

Don't forget your cufflinks, string isn't a very good substitute.

except in one respect, the buttons tend to be covered by another layer of cotton, as in the example above

In some cases the dress shirt is accompanied by studs instead of buttons

However, a plain white shirt will be fine I am sure.

Will you be dancing around your manbag at the post-dinner celebrations?

I'd expect that from Chomps, but not you Claire.

9/10 on the lol-scale though, well done.

dress shirts usually have a "detail" which can range from pleated front, fancy buttons, usually double cuffed and of course the option of wing collar.

If you have a good black suit and a nice white shirt (but pref a dress shirt), then you would get away with just adding a bow tie, and i don't think people would even comment.

If anyone does your line is

"well you know what its like, i pulled it out of the carrier after last years bash (or other made up occasion), and obviously after losing my 5st, you could get me and ............ (insert funny name of fat person relevant to evening) in it. So I decided to jazz up this old thing (point at nice black suit)"

This would be acceptable. I would only feel uncomfortable doing this if i knew it was going to be a room full of serious money and they were all super dressed up in a black tie MEANS black tie way - but that is very very unusual

(and bongo yes - these things get pulled out once/twice a year and retained for 10-15 years in many cases!)

There's the rub, & hence my question/nervousness - it is EXACTLY that. Way, way, above my station in life, but I'm sort of representing someone else, & can't afford to get it wrong.

I think I'm gonna have to nip to M & S & buy the lot, just in case. "Dinner Jacket", Dress Shirt, Dickie-Bow.
