I just google-imaged Kirsty - she looks exactly as I imagined.

I'm not going to comment. my taste in women is getting me in to trouble just lately.

Quite right too - from one of your Daughter's, too! A good, sharp, comeback/rebuke by you, though. Yes, yes, we know, you are in charge. Wink

Is "Red'sGirl" the one who calls me "Uncle Tony"?

Poetry sucks. It's right up there with Opera, Ballet, & Shakespeare in my mind. OK, it does not suck at all, but hard as I try, I just don't get any of those things. I feel inferior & inadequate that I don't get it, but I don't, & that's that.

I'm not sure that there is any reason to feel "inferior & inadequate" because you don't get Opera, Ballet & Shakespeare.

A person's life may be enhanced by their appreciation of these "arts". They may even find deep meaning in paintings, sculpture, food, fashion, music or athletic expression. Apparently, some people even gain great enjoyment from the study of architecture and engineering.

However, to feel superior (or inferior) based on which of these fields of human expression you appreciate seems rather silly. The people who I pity are those who feel a need to profess an interest in some particular field purely because they believe that it reflects well on them and is the "done thing".

The ability to appreciate any of these "gifts" is wonderfully rewarding at times but there are so many aspects of life for people to enjoy; we don't have to get them all.

But it IS a shame I don't "get" any of them, because I'm quite sure I'm missing all sorts of good stuff.

Lol @ some folks getting a kick from Engineering & Architecture......

Anyway, I have some new words for you, which I discovered last week. Be right back......

A report by Lex in the FT about a serious outage at the LSE last week was eventually put down to malfeasance by a disgruntled employee. I liked that.

Appreciation of words and language is pretty rewarding generally, I guess. It doesn't have to be poetry or Shakespeare. Beware of being accused of becoming a snob, though.

President Obama referred to being given, by the American electorate, at the half-term elections or whatever they are called, a right "shellacking", & the word was evidently used in the context of President Omaha's "opprobrium".

You'd not hear the late Sir Michael Foot using that fancy language.

Ooh, I SO want to be a snob.

And don't start on me because you have withdrawal symptoms now that the Ladies Tennis Season is finished. Wink

there're some good words in today's guardian, also a photo of 2 of blonde's better known members

Quote
(1) Oncethmus - The loud and hard cry of a donkey (2) Suffarcinate - Pack tightly (3) Weesquashing - Spearing of fish or eels by torchlight from canoes. (4) Archigrapher - Principal or head secretary or clerk (5) Lugent - Sobbing or grieving (6) Philagyrist - Someone who loves money (7) Homerkin - Liquid measure for beer (Cool Not a rare word as such, but the collective noun for orangutans, which is weird enough to warrant a footnote (9) Jobler - One who does small jobs (10) Sturionic - Pertaining to the sturgeon. (11) Eternitarian - One who believes in the eternity of the soul (12) Quadrimular - Something lasting four years - unlike a tattoo! (13) Modernicide - The killing of modern people. (14) Welmish - Of a pale or sickly colour (15) Aeipathy - A continued passion; an unyielding disease

I am kinda in the same boat with my views on Poetry, I find it hard to get excited about it. This was a little embarrassing recently at work I had the pleasure of sitting down with Simon Armitage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Armitage) who has given all his past work, records and doodles to our University special collections. He asked me about poetry and if I had read any of his poems?! i was like nope but I have seen you on TV a few times Smiley I knew he loved footy and quickly diverted the conversation to Huddersfield his 2nd passion in life.

Having finally read some of his stuff I prefer his plays Smiley and his recent interview with God aka Morrissey.

Perhaps not opprobrium but shellacking, I would think.
It strikes me as a good, earthy expression.

That just reminded me of that classic facebook thread. I think I'm going to go and read that now.

Where on earth does "oncethmus" originate from?!

Modernicide - surely that's a level?

In fact, surely it's a "spot the spoof word" piece? Half those words cannot possibly be real!

You levelling me again Gatters?

To be fair, Obama used the word "shellacking", whereas The Times, trying to contextualise the word, used "opprobrium".
