BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott in Delhi today
"The security people tried to take my sandwiches away from me today - I can't eat curries because of the spices in them from when I had [throat] cancer. I had to speak to their superior, who was a brigadier or a general or something. They took my plastic fork and knife from me too."
Lucky the Brigadier wasn't a woman... he might have given her a right hander....

For a second I was pretty excited. I thought Boycott might have 'done a FullFlush' and nicked some sarnies of his own. I was a bit disappointed with the outcome, tbh.

When one day cricket started, 1962 Gillette Cup, I think Sussex won it in the final scoring 172-5 off 60 with Ted Dexter scoring the runs
It was only post Packer, and the advent of the World Cup in 75 that the game became distinct
I too far prefer Test Cricket, or indeed County cricket
When I go to watch county cricket, I reckon there are less than 10 of us sub 60 years old in a midweek crowd.
How much is it to get in on an average wednesday in June to see some county stuff?
£10ish, possibly £15
When I was a kid I often went to Hampshire or Kent Championship home games, when the family visted either of my set of grandparents during the summer holidays.
Haven't been to a game for over 30 years, will definitely rectify this in the summer and go to a Durham game.
Fantastic memories watching Malcolm Marshall, Gordon Greenidge, Derek Underwood, Asif Iqbal etc
Ah...the good old days of turning up at Dean Park Bournemouth to watch Hampshire.
First ever job....wandering the ground selling scorecards.Well chuffed to make a few quid as a kid, which paid for the bus/drinks/ ice cream.
Used to go to Dean Park a lot, Greenidge and Marshall in their prime. About the only positive thing to say about Nicholas (skipper at the time) was in an era of negative captaincy in general, he was superb at aggressively agreeing terms for run chases during weather-affected matches. Lines like "just how many do you want in order to play?" were commonplace, embarrassing other skippers into reluctantly agreeing to a contest. What would look like a nailed on draw overnight would suddenly become a very decent contest. Tim Tremlett, Rajesh Maru, Cardigan Connor, PA Bakker (lordy) would all wheel away - and then if it looked a bit dodgy, "Malcolm, next over please..."
And funny that Tighty mentioned Sylvester Clarke, completely co-incidentally I was just searching for video footage of him before reading this thread.
As for Boycott - complete wanker. Regardless of talent, he never batted for England once. Always for himself.

I'll reply to the comments later, the Denis Compton story especially.
Boycott is a wanker? - wash your mouth out Galloway.
For now, one to - I hope - perplex the clever clogs. Yup, that'd be Andrew, Tighty, Mere, Boshi, & all that lot.
This July, there will be......
5 Fridays.
5 Saturdays.
5 Sundays.
Which is, I'm told, incredibly rare.
I imagine anyone can find out when it last occurred. It was a while back.....
But can you show a mathematical formula to work out when it will next happen?
Nope? Thought not.

Can't be that rare surely?
Just needs to be a 31 day month and the previous month to end on a Thursday.
October 2010 for example. Without checking must happen at least once every 2 years.
Compare that to 11th November this year.. 11/11/11. Now that's rare!

This often quoted and (probably) apochryphal tale sums up Boycott for me.
On the 1970 Ashes tour the England batsmen were struggling against the spin bowler John Gleeson. Basil D'Oliveira joined Boycott at the wicket and seemed to be able to play Gleeson well. D'Oliveira said to Boycott, "Geoff, I've worked him out". Boycott is alleged to have replied, "I can see that - but don't tell the others".
He also ran out Arkle (Derek Randall) at Trent Bridge in 1977 but I'm not one to bear grudges. Here's John Arlott:

the five weekends in a month thing happened in Oct 2010 too
legend has it it can occur only once every 823 years but that is false. It will happen any time in a Gregorian calendar where a month with 31 days starts on a Friday.
January 1 can be any of seven days of the week (which also determines the days of the rest of the dates). And it can either be or not be a leap year. Seven days times two possible numbers of days is only fourteen ways to have the dates and days matched up.
It will also happen in these months (searched for this)
* January: 2016, 2021, 2027, 2038, 2044, 2049
* March: 2013, 2019, 2024, 2030, 2041, 2047, 2052
* May: 2015, 2020, 2026, 2037, 2043, 2048, 2054
* July: 2016, 2022, 2033, 2039, 2044, 2050
* August: 2014, 2025, 2031, 2036, 2042, 2053
* October: 2021, 2027, 2032, 2038, 2049, 2055
* December: 2017, 2023, 2028, 2034, 2045, 2051

2010 was probably rare, because it had two months (January and October) where there 5 weekends in a month.

Dates 28 years apart are always on the same day - a perpetual calendar makes use of that fact (14 possible permutations, but a 28 year cycle). This is based on 7 starting days to a year , leap year=yes/no, and a 4 year leap cycle.
Unfortunately, I believe this rule will get broken with the lack of leap year in 2100. This is a guess, but I suspect a TRUE perpetual calendar needs a 2800 year cycle (400 year leap cycle, 7 permutations).
And then some pope will come along and tell us we need to lose 10 days again and it will all screw up.
Edit: Actually not. A 400 year cycle has 146097 days in it (97 leap years), which is divisible by 7, so you could have a perpetual calendar with only a 400 year cycle.
