Tikay here are a load of aviation videos for you to watch on a cold winters day,I particularly like the 146 landing a London City and the last video of the Russian plane crash is pretty amazing when you realise it's the crew speaking and they are not dead.

Nigel Mansell won Sports Personality Of The Year.

He may have spoken in a monotone nasal drawl, and been quite boring in an interview, but he drove with lots of personality.

I posted this on the SPOTY thread on the sports board, so thought I'd recycle it here.

I'm pretty sure the word 'personality' in SPOTY doesn't refer to this definition of the word:

- The totality of qualities and traits, as of character or behavior, that are peculiar to a specific person.

but instead to this one:

- The quality or condition of being a person.

Basically, it's synonymous with the word 'person'. Or this year, 'man'.

I take it I haven't missed anything interesting.

I was going to add a question mark to the above sentence, but I decided it would be superfluous.

Kept me up half the night watching those - thank you! (A few do not work, but most did).

That 757 short-field take off - from a standing start to take off in 12 seconds flat!

The London City BAE146 thing, how the hell did that not crash? Imagine what it must have been like as a passenger?

The Fed Ex time lapse animation of daily flights in the USA was beyond belief - I wonder how many daily flights it operates in & out of their Memphis hub? I did a google on FedEx Express, & it seems they operate nearly 700 (seven hundred!) aircraft, & FedEx as a whole employ 290,000 staff. Jeez, what a company!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FedEx_Feeder#FedEx_Feeder

One of the Vids that did not work is the famous one of that Illyushin-76 using all the runway at some Australian airport, one of the most scary aircraft vids I have ever seen, so here it is, from You Tube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThoZNxy2JZk

The ATC commentary is com, & key to the whole thing, so laid back.

you can lift it up any time you like.

Jesus Christ,

SHIT!

Went to a private function last night, to “celebrate” the retirement of a special friend, a Senior Exec @Sky Sports.

It was held at this rather odd place, an eatery, Private Members Club, & Hotel, on Chiswick High Road…..

http://brasserie.highroadhouse.co.uk/

Whilst waiting to be ticked off the Guest List, I heard the Receptionist fielding a ‘phone enquiry for a room in the Hotel – “yes, we have 2 room sizes, “small”, & “tiny””.  Bet she’s right, too.

Think I may have become almost infatuated during the function, when I was introduced to Annabel Croft by a mutual friend, & she made me feel special, & we chatted for a good 30 minutes. She really is gorgeous, in every way, not an ounce of spare flesh on her, & mentally, as sharp as a tack.

Hard to believe that she retired from Pro Tennis at the tender age of 21 (in 1987 – how can that have been 24 years ago?!)  – “too much stress & hassle”, but since then has become a very astute businesswoman, & she has contracts with almost every major TV broadcaster. She runs a Tennis Academy in Roehampton, I think, & does a fair bit of charity work, & assorted non-sport TV stuff apparently.

Married to an ex Admirals Cup yachtsman, who now works for one of the City institutions, & I gathered the impression that she lives rather well.

To top it off, they have a boat (river cruiser) moored on the Thames just a few hundred yards from my new place, upon which they cruise & schmooze up & down the Thames on Spring & Summer days, & with a little nudging from our mutual friend, an invite was soon forthcoming, & rapidly accepted. Ooooohhhh.

Here’s her Wiki…..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annabel_Croft

…and her own Website…..

I also spent a goodly while chatting with Andrew Castle, who I already know vaguely, we share the make-up room on occasion, & just chit-chat & stuff. But last night the convo developed into potential future business interests. (“Interested”….)

Andrew was Britain’s # 1 ranked Tennis player back in the day, but that never meant more than about 40th in the world.

After Tennis, he was with GMTV for 10 years or more, & has done all sorts of TV work, but his greatest pride seems to be his work @ Wimbledon annually for the BBC.

He’s a good looking guy, & dresses immaculately.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Castle

Here’s his own Website – note the similarity in design to Annabel’s one, same IT peeps, or Agent, presumably.

http://www.andrewcastleofficial.co.uk/

His current passion is a new business venture – BetLiveRadio.com, for which considerable funding has been raised for start-up capital.  Still got some work to do on the Website ahead of their Spring 2012 launch, though……

http://betliveradio.com/

He has invested a lump of cash into the venture, but I think he can afford it. The business model is an internet-based digi-radio station that runs daily from Noon until 7pm, promoting Sports Betting, & giving latest info & updates on prices, tips, goss etc. 5 Bookies have signed up already, & I assume that includes Wm Hill, as the MD is an ex William Hill exec.

The income would come from affiliate deals. With Online Sports Betting & “Mobile” gaming moving forward so rapidly these days, I’m not wholly sure it’s sustainable, & I’d not invest any cash in it, but he was deffo putting out feelers for on-air broadcasters to take a stint or two a week behind the microphone. Jeez, I’d love to do some radio work, almost more so than TV.  I’ve already tapped Sarah Champion up for a few late night Shows on Absolute, & I would not bet against it happening. Wish I was a little younger though, age counts against me so much.

Still, dreaming is free, better to try & fail, & all that.....

Andrew Castle is one of my top three most annoying commentators, totally besotted by the sound of his own voice.

I absolutely dread his Wimbledon coverage.

Nigel Mansell won Sports Personality Of The Year.

because people knew who he was whether they followed his sport or not as is the case I would imagine with every previous winner. in fact he won it twice because his popularity transcended his sport

it's interesting that you highlight the word personality suggesting that mansell had none yet suggest that donald should be in the running for the award while tikay reckons he lacks charisma. I've got no opinion either way, I don't follow golf, have very little interest in it and had no idea he was winning stuff same as almost all of the voting public

donald and dai greene may as well be a million to 1, they can't win

if they did win the vote they'd only get DQed for cheating anyway like happened to that fishing dude

I think the Mansell thing was partly related to the very high exposure (& interest) in F1 at the time, which was in it’s BBC heyday, & of course the Media loved Nigel, so he got plenty of larging up.

It was only later that the “boring” tag was added to his name. All else apart, he was an absolute beast behind the wheel, & probably the best driver of his time. Half the UK must have been watching that oh-so-dramatic Australian GP @ silly o’clock in the morning when his tyre exploded.

He lives in Jersey these days, having relocated from the Isle of Man 15 years back. Incredible to realise he is 58. Can’t be doing with old peeps.
