Top man, thank you.

Nothing spectacular there (that fits my schedule & availability) but at least it's reasonably cheap & affordable.

Might bounce between these, the Venetian, & maybe 1 or two of the WSOP Omaha or mixed game stuff.

I'll print off all the schedules you have given me, & have a bimble.

Quite keen to play a bit more cash this year, too. So much to do, so little time.

How has your week been mate, you sounded a bit stressed on a few of the threads yesterday. Everything ok?

How many times have you seen players who play poker recreationally.  You know, for fun, by their own choice, in their own time, as a hobby...  Moan, start a leaving thread, insist the game is fixed, rigged against them, promise never to play again, only to find them playing the next day, then announce their return after they had been playing?

Rhetorical question I know.

The answer is too many.

Probably best I say "no comment", beyond I just can't understand that sort of thing.

Everything is hunky-dory thanks Phil.

Some days - some weeks in fact - the day job gets a bit heavy, but it's fine. Bound to be a few cloudy days, but its mostly clear, fine & sunny. Am having a relaxing couple of days, then got the Show tomorrow night.

Had hoped to get up to DTD this week, but had too much on.

How was the holiday? You were much missed here.

Yo Gramps, quick question regarding Virgin Atlantic, when I went to check in at Hong Kong Central for my flight back to the UK we were told that Virgin had over sold seats in the Premium Economy block and were quite persistent in their request of asking us to down grade to economy with the promise of the difference in money being refunded and some flying miles thrown in.

I declined their offer and was very patient with them and after 20 minutes they agreed I could stay in Premium economy but wtf, If I wanted economy seats I would have requested for them in the first place, why do these companies over sell their seat allocation? is this the norm? As a newbie to flying I have no idea how they work but it is very frustrating when you are at check in and they make you feel guilty for not down grading and helping them out in their "hour of need".

I did say that I was more than happy to upgrade to Upper Class if it would help them out but that wasn't met with a favourable response Smiley

Told you not to trust Wooly Jumper!

But really, that’s a great question, Dyl, & apologies for the delay in replying.

To understand it, first we need to know how the business model of airlines works, & as a good rule of thumb, they measure something called “Passenger Load Factor” (“Load Factor” for short), see….

http://moneyterms.co.uk/plf-passenger-load-factor/

Put simply, an airline makes a loss if less than (an average of) x% of the seats are sold, & a profit if MORE than x% of the seats are sold. Crucially, every seat above break-even is almost 100% pure profit, which drops straight through to the bottom line.

Back in the 70’s & eighties, load factors of 40% & 50% were quite common, I flew in a transatlantic 747 Pan Am (now busto) which had less than 20 seats filled in both directions! That has all changed now, partly because of code-sharing, where allied airlines “share” some flights, enabling better capacity utilisation.

A few examples are here…..

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/06/canada-airlines-idUSN1E7850CA20110906

Airlines such as everyone’s favourite, Ryanair, have different %’s at which they become profitable. A lean, fit, super-efficient business like Ryanair can cope with lower load factors. (78% in March, I believe).

The relevance of all this to your question comes when flights are fully booked, 100%, or nearly so. Experience says that up to 10% (on average) of booked passengers are ”no shows”, (in many cases because of missed connections on the same airline) & here lies the rub.

With the need for any business to maximise & increase profits – an absolute legal obligation, by the way – they sussed that they could actually sell some or all of these “spare” seats. And they do.   It’s a very useful income stream & profit centre for them.

However, if they sell 110% of the seats on a flight, & only 5% of the original passengers are no shows, they have a problem - & that is when passengers get “bumped”.

It has never happened to me, & I’d be well-miffed if I did. I hope I’d retain a semblance of dignity & not get all shouty-wouty – that solves nothing, & is counter-productive imo – but I’d be pretty cross, for sure. Who would not be?

Wow, thanks for that response Gramps!

I will have a look at those links later on.

I didn't get all "shouty - wouty" but others did and it didn't work out to well for them as I saw them boarding the plane and sitting in economy. I was quite lucky as my cousin had some contacts within the Virgin Atlantic Hong Kong offices and due to the "bad" seat I had on the way out, they had arranged a aisle seat for my return journey and I showed the young lady at the check in desk the email I received from and she processed my ticket right away.

If I was a regular flyer then I may have pushed for a load of air miles etc and down graded and I would probably have got more benefits as well but I am not a big fan of flying so don't expect to fly again to soon...unless I bag a Vegas seat next door ofc, only got one final to play so I should really pull my finger out... Cheesy

There are TWO Finals remaining, unless you are saying you are not available for one.

Hope you can get down to Cardiff in a fortnight for the SPT, be grand to see you, not seen you in ages.

Were you in Hong Kong for some Rugby or similar? How did it go?

Today, the monster £1 million UKIPT begins, at DTD, & I'm playing it - vicariously.

Work means I don't play so many Tourneys these days, & I'm shite anyway, but I still get my kicks from staking others when work gets in the way of burning my money by playing. I'm working this week, so UKIPT was never on my calendar, unfortunately.

So I went a bit silly on UKIPT, & set out to buy one whole entry, but in pieces of others, & it worked out pretty well in the end. Or it will if any of them cash.

My action is as follows....

cf - 10%

Eso Kral - 10% (plus the same in a £110 sidey).

Red - 25%

leethefish - 10%

Methuselah - 25%

AdamM, 10%

ACE2M 10%

On top of that, I have some private (off-forum) stakes in 4 different players, amounting to another 45% in total. Overspent, then.

ACE2M, sadly, has had to withdraw, so that cash comes back into the returns column.

Quite how I missed buying a piece of Camel I don't know - his thread coincided with my absence from blonde because of business pressure elsewhere, bugger, but I wish him well, too. He has also sold action in the High Roller.

I've also been asked overnight to sell on part of one of my stakes, & I've asked the player if he minds - I don't think he will - so I might have got some cash back before it starts.

Quite important that, because, in accounting terms, when I buy action, I write down (write off) the investment to zero immediately. Any return then goes in the profit column, to balance against the loss column. So, I have a good few % back already. A weird way of looking at it, & probably wrong, but I like to do it in a businesslike fashion as to the accounting.

All "my" players play on Days 1b & 1c, though I'm not sure what day the horse shit sandwich will be on the menu.

Good luck to all of them. Please.

In a few days time, I'll either look very smart, or like one of these.....

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, I don't have to pay you when I get the lot then  Grin

Pay attention Mondy!

On top of that, I have some private (off-forum) stakes in 4 different players, amounting to another 45% in total

You were amongst those. Not that it seems to have helped. If people contact my via PM as to staking, I'm not sure it's right to mention it.

Not sure who - if any - I still have left, think just 2 or 3 still in. My lucky money has gone a bit cold.

How was the Tourney, anyway?

glad everything is ok, enjoy the rest mate, I am sitting vegging in front of the National coverage handing out betting slips to the kids to give them an interest.

was very quiet, nice to have my bro and his girl with us too.  We had a lovely cottage near Filey and spent a couple of days there and Scarboro, just pottering around and eating badly really. The kids discovered how much fun it is sticking 2p coins into the tuppeny shover type games. I think my serious talk with them about how -EV these were fell on deaf ears but the little yelps of delight on their faces when they got 8p to fall out for every30p they put in was well worth it.

Connor even got a genuine hole in one on a crazy golf hole too, the sweetest thing was him saying afterwards'daddy, can we play this together every day so I can get better at it'

was lovely

Umm, remind me who or what Seabass is.

Good to see you last night, you seem to have lost a bunch of weight. Not sure pink shirts suit you though.

Nirvana came to my DC cash Table later, I showed him a few tricks.

Vinni has lost half a stone! Or that is what he told me.

I'm playing day 1b Tone.

When I went back to DTD on Sunday to play my 5bb on day 2 of the 100k GTD, I went out on the first hand that I played.

However....

Instead of going straight home, I stayed and played the satellite for the £1 million UKIPT and somehow, I managed to bink a seat.

So. that being the case, if it's OK by you, and if none of the other diners object, I would like to buy one slice of that shit sandwich back.

You binked a seat? Wow, well done!

I blame Matt Russell for making you go back, those maths he did saying your chips were worth whatever made my eyes bleed. He was right though, just this once.

If I read you correctly, you want to buy back some of the 25% I currently have - is that correct? If so, yes, of course - how much do you want back?

Next up, we can begin negotiations on price......I'm gonna get Matt Russell to be my broker. God help you.

You currently have three slices. two large, and one small. I would like to buy one large slice back please.

I think £55 would be a fair and reasonable price.

Think thats called "damage limitation".

Fine effort, Tom.

Enjoy it?

Best memory of it?

How good are DTD? Different class, a league apart, it seems to me. Incredible what they have achieved, almost without any credible competition, too, which makes it all the more extraordinary.

Second-fav for the National obv. Absolutely will not stay 4m4f though. The days when 2m4f horses could win a National are over. Max place lay short IR.

T-shirt was not pink, not Dennis The Menace's and not bought from Jacamo. Passes for high fashion on market days round here just so you all know.

Oh,...... a Grand National horse.

Nah, I have not bet on the GN for many decades, probably not since the eighties. Luckily, nobody on the "tikay Tips" gave me any GN tips, either. I assumed "Seabass" was someone to do with Bev Pace.

I can't bear to watch the National, either, I wince every time a horse falls badly. Eventually, I worked out that - for me - it was just not fun to watch. I've seen many a horse die in horseracing, & I understand that it happens,  there are worse things in life, but to see a horse with a broken leg just "flapping" around is just too much to bear.

I've gone soft in my dotage.

I have some "fun" selections in the Aintree tipping thread, & a few sweepstakes, but I'll not be watching.
