She was born in 1946, and I believe the clip was from 1976.

Yes, pretty sure Frank Bough anchored the same show.

Michael Barratt was the first presenter and I think Frank Bough took over from him. Sue Lawley started off as a presenter on Spotlight Southwest down here before she hit the big time.

You are right, I think. I've been trying to work it out, but I suspect it was more like 1972. (See next Post).

According to Wiki, she began her working life on that wonderful newspsaper, the Western Mail.

She began her professional career as a trainee reporter on the Western Mail and South Wales Echo between 1967 and 1970,[1] during which she shared a house in Cardiff with Michael Buerk. She then moved to BBC Plymouth as a subeditor and freelance reporter from 1970 until 1972.[1] In 1972, she gained prominence as one of the reporters/presenters of the BBC TV's news magazine Nationwide which she appeared on until 1975, when she was offered the main anchor role on the nightly news show Tonight. Lawley left Tonight on maternity leave shortly after its launch and did not return to the show. Instead she rejoined Nationwide as one of the two main anchors, alongside Frank Bough. Lawley remained with the show until it came to a close in 1983.

It seems oddly incongrous to see the names of Sue Lawley & Frank Bough linked.

In 45 years in the public eye, Sue's life does not appear to have been touched by even the merest whiff of scandal, which is quite something these days, especially with all ther Social-Media stuff we see now, where peeps say anything about anyone.

Frank Bough did not quite pass the test, though.

Both had interesting lives, whatever way you look at it.

yes Michael Barratt was who I was thinking of.  According to wikipedia Sue Lawley's first stint with the prog was in 1972, I think the clip is more likely to be from that time given its b-and-wness.

It was quite remarkable that Ms Lawley was untouched by scandal really.

There is a story (which has never been confirmed, and has also been attributed to Jan Leeming) of Sue Lawley getting intimate with another member of staff in a BBC cupboard. Sadly for her, she'd forgotten to take her mic off and thus the phrase 'Fuck me till I fart' being heard by sound engineers and passing into BBC legend (and also being reference by Chris Morris in The Day Today with his 'Fact me till I fart' introduction).

Horse racing. Excellent! Just what this thread needs.

Not to be pedantic, but really we are talking about racehorse breeding Tom. The official rating of a racehorse has a direct correlation with its stud career, & fee. A Derby winner commands a huge stud fee, it can be a 6 figure sum in exceptional cases, & they can cover over 100 mares in a year if they work both hemispheres.

Multiply that by, say, 10 seasons, & that is a lot of dough. Generally, the jockey of a Derby Winner gets one free nomination per year, or used to when I followed the business. Imagine how much money Mr Piggott is worth......

If time permitted, I'd write pages & pages on that subject, it was where my interest in horses first began. Fortunately for all, I don't have the time.

Did you know that they can breed racehorses that get 5 furlongs, & not a yard more, or which are useless at less than 2 miles?

Often, a "flat" horse which barely gets a mile on the flat will be useful at 2 mile hurdles, too.

Incredibly fascinating subject, all governed by a simple rule - to breed the best, you should mate the best with the best. And yet history is littered with wonderful racehorses where the Dam is unproven, & has what appears to be poor lineage.

The great Brigadier Gerard (named after a character in literature I believe) was owned by John Hislop, who studied racehorse breeding at great lengths. He put a good sire - Queens Hussar (winner of the Sussex Stakes & Lockinge, two very good races) to a mare, La Paiva, who never even raced. But go back 60 years, & she traced back to none other than the legendary Pretty Polly.

There is much luck in the breeding of racehorses, but much skill, too. Bit like poker I suppose.

In the 1971 2000 Guineas, Brigadier Gerard, Mill Reef, & My Swallow all went to post, having won, between them, 18 of their 19 races. I doubt there has ever been a tougher or more competitive 2000 Guineas. The Brigadier murdered them, winning by 3 lengths.

He enjoyed a Timeform Rating of 144, which was quite something, but he was a complete dud at Stud, & threw very little of note. Mill Reef, by contrast, who was thrashed by the Brigadier, was very successful indeed at Stud. His stock included Shirley Heights (Epsom Derby), Reference Point (ditto) & Acamas (Prix de Jockey Club, the French Derby).

Pictured below is Brigadier Gerard, with Joe Mercer up top, & led in by his owner & breeder, John Hislop. John wrote a wonderful book on the Brigadier, which I still have, but he must have been a dreadful owner to train for, as he was a right fussy & interfering little bugger. Major Hern tolerated him though, & wisely so.

The Brigadier won 18 of his 19 races, the exception being when he was beaten by the great Roberto, ridden I would assume by Piggott, who later rode him to Derby success for Vincent O'Brien. When Piggott won the Derby on Roberto, the Epsom crowd fell silent, as Piggott had famoudsly "jocked off" Bull Williamson. This was to become a recurring theme, & eventually most racegoers came to idolise Lester.

The other photo is Pretty Polly winning at Sandown Park of all places, just 3 miles from my London abode.

Boo!

I must tell you, we take 5 minute breaks once an hour during the 5 hour 861 Show, & I learned the hard way that it is best to turn the sound pack off before popping to the Gents for an evacuation.

Anyway, I refuse to believe that Sue Lawley tale, she is way too posh to pass wind.
