I think it's almost as daft saying that all punk is crap as most other generalisations.

Many kids today say that they don't like The Rolling Stones as it's the fashion, but when listening to their music not knowing who it is love it.

The Clash were an outstanding band with a unique style and a superb back-catalogue of both covers and songs that they wrote themselves. I have them in my top five bands of all time.

Love to know who the other four are

My bands would all have to achieve more than the sum of their parts to make the list so some of my favourite artists such as Bob Marley were so powerful that the band was rendered virtually irrelevant despite some of the players being superb musicians. So..

The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, tbc...

Quite right Ralph. I remember when I first saw an episode of Sir David Attenborough's ground breaking natural history series 'The Blue Planet'.

I was sitting in a hotel room in London when it was broadcast, and I watched spellbound as an hour's worth of the most amazing aquatic  footage ever to be filmed flitted across the screen. Spectacular sequences which gave us a unique insight into the behaviour of some of the world's most rare and beautiful sea creatures.

When it ended, I rang my dad.

"Did you see it dad?" I asked, almost breathless with excitement.

He listened in silence as I described in great detail what was then and is now the greatest ever documentary series about life in the world's oceans.

He waited patiently until I had finished waxing lyrical  before uttering the immortal line.....  "I don't like fishes."

That was it. 20 years of dedicated work by the world leading exponents dismissed in four words.

In our family,  the phrase has become a byword for anyone who makes sweeping,  dismissive statements about anything.

I don't like fishes.

On reflection I may have to amend my earlier statement to "top half-dozen or so alltime favourite bands".

Lynard Skynard are definitely on my list.

I'll tell you a band that if you asked me, I would likely say I didn't like, but if their songs come on I will sing along every time - Queen.

I was forced to watch 'We Will Rock You' about 18 months ago and remembered thinking "wow Freddy Mercury was an amazing singer, none of these guys are coming close to even doing 5% justice to his songs"

Same as you Barry, was never mad on queen, but some of their songs are awesome, probably cos Freddie sung them. Their live stuff in front of audiences, particularly wembley is great too. We will rock you was fun. So is jersey boys, which has absolutely nothing to do with queen, but thought I would mention it anyways.

I saw Book of Morman in the States on my honeymoon and its now come to London - it's the perfect musical to take a lady if you don't like musicals yourself, as its all South Park toilet humour. Funniest thing I've ever seen.

I have to include Pink Floyd on my list who in their pomp (Dark Side of The Moon/Wish You Were Here) epitomised a band whose sum was vastly greater than it's parts.

The Who merits a spot too as they were so avant-garde musically and styistically.

So hard to narrow it down to five isn't it?

Got anyone from the current century? Not asking as a rub, just curious.

Great Record  ( even better with a sneaky smoke ) but how " out of keeping " is  the track "Money" on this album ?  you have all the trippy female lyrics , mind expanding , chilled out  stuff...Grand Father clocks chiming , alarm clocks  ringing etc  then you get this commercial sell out track ... very strange !
