Andrew put that up a few pages ago, but it got lost in the cement/concert stuff and wasn't acknowledged.

I thought it was excellent, Andrew.

Yeah.  Now and then we get lucky and they'll throw in a train or plane tale...

Nice blogging Mr K.

Just testing to see if all the systems work, Tom, byt/links, Twitter, click-throughs, da de da. Think I wrote around 25 blogs from Vegas last year, but they are done for a reason, & it's important to measure click-rates & stuff. It was only a year ago, but I've plum forgotten how the various software suites work.

I've wondered where the expression "plumb forgot" came from and you've just reminded me to find out.

It is the same as the building term for being straight and true (am I right in saying this is the bubble in a spirit level?). This must logically be the spelling for an LBW shout as well, then.

Actually, plumb must be something to do with lead, as it is Latin.

A plumb rule. So the lead weight must be straight to make it "plumb".

This internet's brill, ain't it?

You just got a peek into the workings of my mind. Not had a cup of tea, yet, so you get 'thinking with my fingers' posts and you get to see my workings out.

As you were.

I knew it was "plumb line", "plumb level" or "plumb" (level/true) but I never realised that "plum forgot" should be "plumb". Still can't quite fathom why.

Learn something new every day.

Even Red-Dog never knew that.

Only the English language adds random & completely silent "b"s at the end of words.

Bomb

Climb

Comb

Tomb (How on earth does Johnny Foreign learn how to pronounce that? Should be "toom").

Limb

Crumb

Rhubarb

They have different origins, too; some come from Latin and some from the Germanic languages.

According to etymonline.com, limb (as in an arm or a leg) was originally lim but the b was added sometime around the sixteenth century. Lim in that sense seems to be Germanic.

The sense of limb meaning an edge or fringe has always carried the b, coming from the Latin limbus.

Ahh, I see.

Guess that'd be the rule of thumb.
