Then, about a month ago, our team played his again. I won my game and played pretty well by my standards. At the end of the match, during the customary exchange of handshakes, he came over and said "well played, Simon", offering his hand.

I did something very unlike me. All I did was look completely confused, deep into his eyes. I gave him a look that left him under no illusions, a year on, that I hadn't forgotten.

The look on his face was quite a picture.

You know this already, off course.
For the few people who want to have a rant at you about trivial things. There are huge numbers more, who believe you do a great job on Sky  and feel it would be a much poorer place if you, understandably,  decided that you had had enough.

Some of the threads running at the minute are just incredible. Disappointing me most is that some of the comments are being made by people who, up to now, I've always seem as valuable contributors to the forum.

(If at some stage you do decide to say what you really want to, please let me know in advance so that I can read it before it gets modded!)

The subject of trolling I must admit now fascinates me. I never gave it a second thought but in the last six months have experienced a fair bit of it, and it has opened my eyes to it happening to others.

I think the optimal strategy with a troll is to ignore them. There is almost literally no other way to respond to them. You give a reasoned response, they poke holes in it. You try and fob them off, they call you on it. You get angry with them, you have just given them what they want. Trolls thrive on attention.

I can't remember the company, but I heard a story recently about a guy who has been repeatedly calling and writing to a company with abusive complaints and some middle management guy had been having sleepless nights trying to craft replies that would make him happy and stop the complaints. After months and months it eventually got escalated to the CEO who wrote a letter simplying saying 'we will miss you' and that was that. I have a feeling it was Branson (years ago obviously) but don't quote me on that.

I found this funny too

Ha!

Thanks Paul, & I hope you & yours are well.

That thread yesterday was just unbelievable......

I shall continue to bite my tongue until the day I retire. Wink

SPT 6-Max next weekend? Be great to see you there, it will be a corking weekend, I'm pretty sure.

Mr Orford will be there, as will Anna Fowler. Anna really is a perfectly lovely person. Orford, not so much......

Yes, we're good thanks.
Unlike you globe trotters on here we've settled for a short break in Devon this summer. If you dare to poke your head in next door over the next couple of days I'm going to upload some pics.
Houses falling into the sea, cliff railways, GWR from Paignton to Dartmouth and The Pilchard on Burgh Island. Might be your sort of thing?

Satted in to SPT a few weeks ago, looking forward to it. See you there.

I'd like to think I didn't reel back quite so girlishly; I stood my ground.

Great stuff, hurry up & upload them.

That stretch of the GWR is amongst my favourite stretches of railway on earth.

See you next weekend. I'll be there from Friday evening through until it ends, on Sunday.

Sorry to hear you have had some of that stuff, Dave.

Yes, the golden rule is NEVER respond, or bite.

I have quite a tale to tell on that, but not yet awhile, on legal advice.

Just lol at that You Tube video! Gotta love hate mail. I have a whole box full of it, truly, 6 inches thick of regular A4 paper!

There are a whole bunch of "tikay" screen-names next door, too. "tikaysucks" is my favourite. Wink

Over a million views- well deserved.

Ooh, thanks hector.

I suspect I enjoyed writing it more than most enjoyed reading it. Sometimes, it is very relaxing, & liberating, to jot stuff down.

Only took 6 years. Fred has got just shy of 700,000 in 10 months!

Is that similar to popping it down?
