How many runners last night at the rendezvous please?

Was there a guarantee and did it make it?

(just interested, I like the venue and the guys who run it)

It had 136 runners, so made £27,200, the Guarantee was £15,000.

The Gent who caused us so much aggro & upset so many has long gone, & I was mightily impressed by everything last night. The current Cardroom Manager (the guy we dealt with when we had the SPT there) was pitching to me hard to get SPT back there.

The whole place has been refurbed.

Nice big tables, good cloth on them, nice chips, plenty of space between Tables to wander around, the Breaks ran exactly (to the second) to the clock, the Dealers were good, plenty of valets,  tea, coffee etc all free, as much as you want, valet parking. Plenty of plasma screens, all smack up to date, too.

It is one of these places where you can just walk in, no need to give your name, register, show any Membership Cards, just stroll right in, & a pretty girl says "hello".

The free meal was superb, the best "Poker Meal" I've ever had in a UK Casino. Food was piping hot, served at the table by pretty young waitresses, linen tablecloths, proper dining tables, stainless steel cutlery, the full works. Dinner Break was 45 minutes I think, just about right.

Nice relaxed "rules" as to cash tables, & they permitted whatever game folks asked for.

The Dealers were all smiley wiley & friendly, which always makes a big difference imo, especially for us recreationals.

Can't praise the place high enough, truly. Not DTD, of course, nowhere is, but DTD set the modern cardroom standards, & others have to try & emulate. Rendezvous Brighton are doing a mighty fine effort.

If you are looking for a venue for a third party event, & DTD is booked, I strongly recomend it. No shit.

Only slight problem is that I think Red is banned down there, saw a sign in Reception, bit of a troublemaker apparently, wants free food & to be treated the same as the locals, & the ban has recently been cemented.

Paul Parker was there last night, & we had a great chat & he thanked me for the nice words about him a few days back.

He blew me away with some stuff, & I'm still not sure he was not lifting my leg, it was extraordinary, but more of that in the next Post.

For now, two details, one important, one of no consequence.

1) He wanted me to pass on his best wishes to Karabiner, & returned the "hello".

More surprisingly, & less conceivably......

2) He says he always reads this Diary, and ONE other. He reads the other Diary as he was born in the town where the Diary author resides these days, loves his writing & silly stories, & likes him very much. So he reads Red-Dogs Diary. Every day.

You cant make this stuff up, but just wait until I tell you the next tall tale he spun me......

How can you not enjoy playing poker with a dude dressed like this?

Eagle eyed viewers will spot Tony Adderley in the background, used to play on the Tribeca sites as "TonySaint".

"I love poker, but I have a job fitting it in with my other hobbies" said Paul.

Other hobbies, Paul?

Yeah, marathon running is one. (What?!)

You run marathons?

Oh yeah, lots of them. The Brighton Marathon (easy, that one), the Eastbourne Marathon (very tough), & I do the Cornwall Marathon every year, too.

I'm still not sure. He did sound very convincing, but if anyone can bluff its him, & if anyone would buy it, its me.

What you reckon?

But then everything just got surreal.....

I also do Brompton Racing

You do what?

Brompton Racing.

What is Brompton Racing?

Fold away bikes.

Fold away bikes?

Yeah, fold away bikes. They have an annual Race at places like Brands Hatch, Goodwood, Blenhein Palace.

You RACE fold away bikes?

Oh yeah. But I'm a bit old for it, cant go the pace, so I am gonna win the "Best Dressed Rider" Category.

The what?

So I had to go a googling.

Boom. It exists!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brompton_World_Championship

...which includes these categories.....

Best Dressed Male 1st Fokko Bakker

Best Dressed Female 1st Rachael Jackson

And note their own website & Official Rules..........

http://bwc.brompton.co.uk/bwc-2013/rules/

Which includes....

5.1 Brompton World Championship All participants, both male and female, must wear a suit jacket, collared shirt and neck tie. Shorts, three-quarter length trousers and skirts may be worn if preferred, though sports attire (e.g. Lycra shorts/leggings, tracksuit pants, etc.) is not permitted. There are no restrictions on shoe-wear.

So I really don't know what to make of it all.

Was he lifting my leg, or serious?

I tell you what though, we all get a bit engrossed in poker, but there are so many wonderful diverse ways of enjoying ourselves out there.

Brompton Fold Away Bike Racing. In a Shirt & Tie. How cool is that?. Hands up who had even heard of such a thing?

Still can't suss if he bluffed me, but if he did, I loved that bluff.

I know you can't post here Paul (lost Log-in?) but thanks for the memories, & fun.

I can actually imagine Ian Gascoigne doing that.

Which online tables are you pounding tonight? Shall I be seeing you in some Omaha 8 on Stars? I'll be on the lookout for flair players from the UK.

Lol at me and flair......

No, just micro stuff next door, nice and relaxing.

Am sorely tempted by some of the upcoming FTOPS/WCOOP PLO8 stuff though.....
They will be good value and have very good structures. The FTOPS in particular had a few playing omaha high in the field. I'm sure after Vegas your missing some adrenaline.

I don't know if you're familiar with Peppa Pig, but I caught this episode today (don't ask) and it made me think of you (for reasons that will become clear).  I'm sure you'll be pleased to see how educational young kids' television has become.  You only need to watch the first couple of minutes

Very good, very good.

That is the sort of thing that would amuse his Tom-ness, who seems to be going through a particularly stubborn, not to say childish, phase right now.

So.......why were you watching Peppa Pig? Can't imagine it was on behalf of Hannh.

Apostrophe anguish

I saw this headline on the BBC website:

Private girls' school to close

Isn't "girls" an adjective - they don't own the school.

Girls is a noun*; think of it like Fathers' Day, Potter's Bar or 3 Years' Interest Free Credit. The apostrophe is correctly placed

*At the risk of getting technical, it is the genitive case

Nothing more satisfying than a chance encounter with a genitive noun.

OK, maybe a well-placed semi-colon.

Get both in a sentence and it's the equivalent of getting a silver DB9 screeching in to score the winner at Wembley, with Kate Moss in the passenger seat, as Slash performs Sweet Child O'Mine on a 1988 Gibson Les Paul.

Probably a joke there.

But no; private refers to the school in this context.
