What is "Hydro" & "SECC"?

The Hydro is the 16,000 capacity concert venue that is the vaguely ufo shaped building in the pic.

SECC is the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (it's not visible in the pic - it's just behind the building that looks like part of the Sydney Opera House - that is the Clyde Auditorium - known in Glasgow as the Armadillo).

Why Glasgow, & not Edinburgh, which is so much posher? Is Edinburgh full up?

Somehow don't see Glasgow as a cultural City, with concerts & stuff. Do they have Art galleries?

A few years ago, he'd have beaten me up for that, he was proper stroppy then, & I was scared of him, but he's mellowed now, due to love, age, & an acceptance of life's natural order.

Not fair - I'd never have beaten you up - taught not to hit old people - I was dragged up right, see!!

Not bad fishing, but there's a few reasons that contribute to Glasgow being a conference hub.

• Population - Greater Glasgow has approx 1.2m - Edinburgh 0.5m
• Space - the filling in of the docks gave a large parcel of land within half a mile of the city centre, one name for the development of the area was the Queens Dock Development.
• Transport - the M8 passes right past the SECC, it has it's own train station as well.
• A Council aggressively trying to improve their city. The Glasgow Garden Festival, the SECC (90% Council owned) etc all working toward getting investment in the city.

Glasgow's got some fantastic art galleries and museums - from the transport museum (about a mile down the Clyde from the SECC), to Kelvingrove, the Burrell, the Huntarian.... I escorted my Mum's friend round a few of them via the open top bus tour one summer - was amazed at all that was there, free to enter - I suppose you don't go to these things as much when yu live in the city...

Also Edinburgh's too posh for concerts.....

You forgot to ask how Rod's beloved Rangers are getting on this season.

They went into liquidation, were bought up by an English asset stripper who started them up again & the new bosses/old fans now spend their time either threatening anyone who notices that the club ceased to exist & burning money at a terrific rate trying to get back to the top league. Hours of entertainment for those on my side

I'll happily stick with Glasgow - although Edinburgh is a nice looking city.

Can't argue you may be a shaven headed football fanatic Rod, however I also wouldn't disagree with you that Glasgow really has so much to offer. The museums are more exciting and much better layouts, Kelvingrove one of my favourites and Mrs Geo, the grandkids and I were at Kelvingrove and the transport museum recently whilst travelling back from Loch Lomond and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Edinburgh is such a nice place because everything is so close together, Glasgow has just as many great buildings and places of interest but due to size a lot of it gets lost to the tourist.

Will take Glasgow over Edinburgh for a good night out too.

Cheers Geo, you're right about Glasgow being more spread out and Edinburgh closer together, I'd say Edinburgh for a day or 2 - Glasgow for a long weekend to a week, although if you get the open top bus ticket you can fit a lot in. I'm a big fan of Kelvingrove, especially if you've kids with you, but if you don't I like the Huntarian, although I hear it's moving to Kelvingrove anyway.

I like the new Transport museum with 2 caveats - 1 I'm not a fan of the cars on shelves cause you don't get as good a look at them, and 2 the tall ship docked beside it seems part of the museum till they try and charge you to get on it.

How do you find these things Rod? Well-named, too, "dorkfiles"!

I never realised how busy Gare de Nord was - busiest in Europe, apparently. I've been there numerous times, but I'm always flustered by time problems, or the pain of getting a taxi, the wait can be up to an hour at times, & I'd never realised what a "grand" station it is. I must walk about with my eyes closed at times.

The one in Mumbai looks almost like the St Pancras frontage, presumably no coincidence.

Good to see St Pancras included, by chance I had a business meeting there on Friday, & afterwards, I had a good wander round. The aura of the place just thrills me, every time I visit it, though I can't say I much like the new modernised bit upstairs, & all the bloody shops. The only shops in a Railway Terminus should be ones selling Railway Books, Model Railways kits, that sort of thing. Oh, & coffee. And sausage rolls.

In fact, I wonder if Grand Central should be #1? Every photo I see of the place, & it also features a lot on TV & stuff, makes me think it might just be the greatest.  

I do actually think that the concourse at Leeds Railway Station might be mini-modelled on New York's Grand Central, see.....
