Apparently, we now have a possible hijack situation with the Malaysian plane, with signals being picked up by satelites for up to seven hours after the planes transponders were deliberately turned off.
What is going with the authorities here? How come they know nothing and deny all possible explanations one minute, then suddenly come up with all this information after a week of wasted time and resources?
Methinks there is some serious ass covering going on behind the scenes.

Here's something I didn't know - Rolls Royce do live monitoring of their aircraft engines. The plane sends data via radio or satellite during the flight.
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn25201-malaysian-plane-sent-out-engine-data-before-vanishing.html
If the engines can do this, then why doesn't the black box?
The monitoring of the engines in real time? RR have 40% of the market for 777 Engines, & there are 1,100 777's in service, each with 2 engines, so RR provided some 880 power plants. Assuming they spend 30% of their life in the air, that is approx 280 engines being simultaneously monitored. I've no idea how thay would do that. bobalike's later Post confirms it though.
The black box? Yes, I'd agree. Very odd, or seemingly so.
The latest news is that the aircraft's comms equipment was deliberately switched off mid-flight, & 15 later, the transponder was also manually switched off. If true - IF - terrorism is now top of the agenda.
The mystery just gets deeper. It's extraordinary that over a week has passed - 9 days I think - & there is no trace of the thing. How is that even possible?
The whole mystery deepens by the day.
For sure, the first book about it will be published within the month, & later, a film will follow.

I think you are right. From the outset, the "official" announcements have not tallied with the known facts.
If it were not for the tragedy of over 200 lives lost (well, probably.....?), this would be an awesome pot-boiler.

Programme on Channel 5 tonight about the missing plane
http://www.channel5.com/shows/the-plane-that-vanished-live/episodes/the-plane-that-vanished-live
edit: clashes with Gogglebox though so you'll have to tape one or t'other
Thanks Claire.
Unforch, I missed it.
I turned my 'phone, e-Mails & blonde off last night, as I needed a bit of a break, & was pokering for some relaxation, & when I turned my 'phone & "Messenger" thing on this morning, I had 13 texts & messages telling me the Show was on, & not to miss it. Bugger! But thanks, anyway.

It seems only yesterday she was the new girl on the scene.
One of those Videos that I never tire of, actually.
I have a little "You Tube Playlist" for the evenings when I'm pokering, just towards the end of my sessions when I am running down the Tables in relaxed mode, & this is on it.
It's amazing how the first few notes of a song can define it.

Ooh, I had heard something about that, but never tried it, thanks Alex. That's tonight sorted.
I guess my VHS recorder is nearly past it's time. I've not used it for ages.
Someone showed me how to use "Sky Planner", which sort of records things, but I'm buggered if I can ever find the stuff I've recorded. I recorded the whole "Great British Rail Journeys", with the excellent Michael Portillo, but they all disappeared somewhere.
Where are you right now? Geographically, I mean.

Don't watch the plane programme, would be an hour of your life you wouldn't get back. Terrible experts, appalling production values, laugh out loud presenting. To a semi-rec-pro pprune geek you'll hate it. Much has now been suprceded by overnight news anyway

Let him watch it. Let him waste hours of his life. That's what I've been doing on that silly plane forum since he posted the link!
Don't understand half of it. But still can't stop reading all 3 million pages or whatever there is.

Thanks Rich. I feared that, but I'll have to watch it now.
The PPRuNe thread is just amazing, costs me an hour or more every day to keep up with it. 4,000 Posts, 199 pages, & an astonishing SIX MILLION views.
Anyone with 4 days to spare can read it here....

Came across the Quest channel yesterday. I saw a programme about the years building up to the second World War and the plot to assassinate Hitler in 1938. At the end of one of the parts, the suspense music started and the voiceover left us with a cliffhanger about whether they'd succeed.
Kind of tough to go along with the suspense tbh.
