Happy Wednesday!
Just a bit.
I went back across to Kingston. They said "come back in 2 hours" so I made it 3, so as to avoid any further delays or excuses.
I rang Vodafone Customer Services from the Vodafone Shop, & had my little electronic notebook handy to jot down the number of the Pack Code.
When I got through, they said
"we are very sorry, but our system went down 20 minutes ago, & we don't expect it to be back up for a few hours yet, maybe not until tomorrow. Try ringing us tomorrow morning".
So that was another futile exercise. 9.30 am tomorrow then, when I guess we will start all over again. Bit of a pain, as I had other things planned tomorrow.
It's all my own fault of course, that's the ridic thing, it was just careless on my part, so there's generally a bill to be paid for carelessness.
Vodafone, however, extract that bill in full, I've never encountered such a rich cocktail of arrogance, insolence & incompetence.
Never mind, on we go.

You could always try another mobile 'phone firm such as EE or O2.
They will be able to transfer all of your contacts to a new network via your sim card.

I challenge anyone to find a more naturally flowing set of lyrics than this - Johnny Cash, Sunday Morning Coming down.

I suppose I could, Ralph, but I don't like change if I can help it, & I've been with Vodafone forever, so I think we are stuck with each other to the bitter end.
I'm more cross with myself than anything, really.

Did you know that Bob Dylan was 75 years old yesterday? 75, sheesh.
Eric Cantona is a mere bit of a kid compared to Bob, he was 50 yesterday.

If you get a tariff which isn't sim only you'll be paying for the handset within that tariff. When the contract ends, if you don't take the 'free' upgrade you'll still be paying the monthly cost of your handset (even though you've already paid for the full amount).
If you like the handset you have and don't want to change it then you should switch to a sim only contract. i.e. if you don't take the upgrade at the end of every contract and just carry on the same as before then you'll be paying hundreds of pounds you don't need to.
An exception is O2, I don't know if other networks do this but O2 split the cost of your bill into the handset cost and the airtime cost. Once the contract is up you no longer have to pay the handset cost and you can just do nothing and the bill comes down to the equivalent of a sim only contract without you having to do anything.
I noticed that on Monday, when I was hunting around for a new iPad, and they were the only ones to split the contract like that.
Didn't see it broken down that way by anyone else.

Tony.
Forgive me for asking but why do you need a pack code? (Actually its PAC) Porting Authorisation Code.
AFAIK you are not porting your number, you're just getting a new phone. You can just go in to any shop, buy one off the shelf and insert your sim card.

Is it because he wants to keep the same number perhaps?

Yeah, I'd guess they're presuming that the sim is gone, too.

Don't know, don't know, & don't know.
As far as I am aware, the existing SIM card is fine, & I told them that.
My only immovable criteria is I want to keep the same number, & have access to my "old" Contacts.
PS - what does "porting my number" mean?

If you want to go with a new service provider, say ee instead of Vodafone and you wanted to keep your number, Vodafone would have to issue you with a PAC which gives ee permission to transfer the number to their network.
Since you are not changing networks you do not need a PAC. Fact.
How come you have never needed one before?
Something's not right Tone, stand on me.
