Oh and are you still a blonde or are you a brunette again?

I've not been to the barbers since well before lockdown, so I have more hair than a rock star right now & it must look absolutely dreadful. I dare not even look in the mirror. I might try cutting it myself soon. That'll be fun. I'm almost tempted to do a chompy & have it all shaved off.

Good to have you back teeks.

Not sure if you heard but Tim Blake posted on fb that Bob the butcher died this week. I’m assuming it’s the same one. The character one 😄

Good Lord.

Must be the same one, there surely can't be two of them.

Jeez, what a character. Was he still with Debbie, do you know?

We first "met" playing on Ladbrokes every afternoon in that $4,000 guaranteed daily, that would be around 2003/4, then we saw each other a lot at live events. Think he was on the Laddies Cruise too.

I never quite knew what was fact & what was myth, but he told me he had done 18 years at Her Majesty's pleasure, & when I asked him why, he said "shop lifting".

We were at J10 Walsall one night, & Bob had this thing where he kissed everyone, full wet jobs on the lips. Well he tried it on Kenny Broad, who was another "character". That sure went well.

He had a spieler in South London, access was up a fire escape and across a flat roof. I got lucky in a cash game there one night & won £4,000, and when it came to leaving at 4am, Bob said "we'll give you a lift Tony, there's a lot of dodgy characters round here". I was so naive I just said "thank you".

He had a red Rolls Royce at the time, proper posh job it was.

RIP Bob.

How's the family Vinni?

You still in Malta?

See much of Ryan these days? He's still doing the business on Sky Poker.

That’s all I know I’m afraid. I only had the pleasure of meeting him twice. Once in Brighton where I I thought you two were gonna have a fight. Do you remember that? And another time he was playing a cash game with Ryan and I. Something happened that night too but I can’t remember what. I’ll check with Ryan and see if he remembers.

Ryan is doing ok. He’s back in England. Has been for a while. Doesn’t do much social Media now afaik. I’ll let him know you were asking for him.

I vividly recall having a ruck with him in Brighton, yes, it was at the Grosvenor, not Rendezvous.

I really never liked him doing that wet kiss on the lips thing & he must have picked a day I was grumpy to give me a full on wet smacker, & it kicked off a bit. We never spoke for a good while after that. I enjoyed his company, I just did not like being kissed by him.

Yes, give Ryan my best regards please. I do a little Results Round Up every day Next Door of all the headline MTT's & he gets regular mentions. In fact, last week he made the finals of 6 different headline MTT's on consecutive nights, which takes some doing.  Then on Monday & Tuesday of this week he won the 10.30pm Quickdraw on consecutive evenings, then ran 3rd in Sheriff last night. Blokes on fire.

It’s been just over 2 years since ‘Stars purchased SB&G, and I’ve still not quite got used to the shock. I assumed I’d soon be down the road, but as it panned out, it made no difference to me, or at least not so far.

Nobody saw that deal coming though, surely?

But the shocks were not over, as next, along came Flutter – Paddy Power/Betfair to you & me - & off we went again, another deal that nobody saw coming.

And who could have possibly imagined that COVID-19, which is destroying whole industries, would have done what it did for Online Poker? Out of the blue, without any extra promotions, capital spend, or even an extra penny in operational costs, Online Poker traffic trebled.

It stayed that way for around 2 months & is now well off the top. And yet, it’s still higher in mid-summer that it was in mid-winter. That’s never happened in the northern hemisphere before & surely will never again.

The whole Online Gaming industry has changed beyond recognition. Who could ever have imagined this beast of a business?

If someone had said 10 years ago all those huge brands then would be together people would have laughed at you.   Same with lolal and lolbrokes merging.  Hills being a relative nobody valued at £300m at the peak of the FTSE slump.  Flutter is in the mid 20s market cap wise in the FTSE 100 now around the £17bn valuation.   It really is some beast now.

It's extraordinary, isn't it? Completely unthinkable even just a few years ago.

Talking of WH, a very shrewd industry insider - who I think you know - said 365 buying WH would not be the daftest idea ever, though traditionally of course 365 don't buy other businesses, they have their own way of working.

Gill is with 365 these days, & she has been WFH for 2 or 3 months, but she has been summoned back to the Office today. She works for the New Jersey department at the moment.

How did you cope with no sport to bet on for 3 months? Your main lines of interest iirc were Greyhounds, NBA & Tennis, which were all out of commission, so what did you do with yourself?

As an aside, how many dog tracks will fail to survive all this?

Hills whole business is so shop/vegas casino based i can't see 365 being remotely interested in it.  They made the biggest decision of their 20 years dumping the shops to coral who overpaid in 2005 just before the crash as they tried to keep up with hills and lolbrokes on shop estate numbers.    I very much doubt they would be looking to buy a business that was very shop heavy with a terrible unperforming online business but who knows?  Buying them would be a drop in the ocean cash wise but i don't see what it would add to their online business.   They will have all their customers already on their books.  Shops are dying quicker now than tthey were because of the virus.  The only reason they might want it is the US casino market hills have a big chunk of.  I would understand that.

Last three months for me has been grinding online poker on your site mainly.  I actually quite enjoyed it for a couple of months in between the dogs finishing and restarting.  Missing the NBA as a fan but i don't bet on it day to day.   Ditto Wimbledon/Queens has been a big miss.  One thing which has surprised me is how little i missed football being played.   It really hasn't bothered me at all and i have hardly watched a game since the restart.  Overall having 3 months without any sport has been a great break from the constant 247 sports world we live in.   Quite refreshing to have a change and jump outside of the punting/sporting bubble most of us live in.

Some dog tracks have already closed for good.  Peterborough has gone.   No streaming contract so behind closed doors makes no sense financially.  They were one of the few tracks who made it pay at the weekends getting punters through the door.  Belle Vue and Poole are close to going but that was the case pre covid.  The lolbrokes/coral owned tracks (Romford/Crayford/Hove/Monmore) won't be going anywhere.  They have the prime afternoon SIS slots every day so make plenty of cash from their bookmaker/streaming contracts even when betting shops decline.

Arena racing (ARC) who own 20 odd horse racing tracks now own several dog tracks bought from Hills a couple of years ago (Newcastle/Sunderland) plus Nottingham so they will be relatively safe going forward as well.   I only do four tracks (Romford/Crayford/Sunderland/Newcastle) and the volumes are holding up well on betfair for them.

Towcester has always reopened under a new owner (who also runs Henlow dogs) and the Derby should be back there next year.  Dogs only no horses.  I think the greyhound industry has to get used to the fact there will be less tracks and the business needs to move online revenue wise rather than actual footfall and stop moaning about the glory days of the 1980s and make the best of the new world to survive.  The major tracks owned by the big players aren't going anyway.   Plenty of investment in the coral/lolbrokes tracks has recently taken place.

Yes, the logic for any 365/WH deal would be strategic, based on WH's US operations. I've no idea if it would happen or not, just passing on the comment by a proper shrewd industry insider.

Bald Fred bought a chunk of Hills at the start of the market crash when they were worth £1bn then sat watching for a month whilst they bottomed out at £300m valuation.  I mean imagine someone telling you 10/15 years ago Hills would be worth less than Denise paid herself in Salary and Divi's in one year.  That kind of tells you how irrelevant hills have become.

There's a House Of Lords Report into remote gambling due out today, & it won't make pleasant reading.

Yes its worrying times some of the things they are potentially discussing doing to clamp down on gambling.   Maximum deposit daily limits to £50/100 a day!!!   Imagine being a millionaire and you can only deposit that a day because of the law.   It could get really messy and a huge over reaction after years of the firms pounding the FOBTs to death.

His back!

The parody by whassisface, that guy I vaguely recognise...all well and good, but we demand the real thing.

Barbers?

I'm just penning 'The Luton Years' chapter of my book (not for publication). Top few memories from those days?

Though the group is new, Flutter is an older name in exchange terms.
Flutter.com did exchange gambling before Betfair bought them circa 20 years ago

Hard to believe Betfair has just turned 20. Love Devine's Oaks in 2000 was the day it all kicked off. The Racing Post are running a series on it over the coming days I believe. It's a shadow of its old self now though. Liquidity was a joke through Royal Ascot, especially IR.

Had to go back to the clippers after 20 years paying, as I was looking like Heinz Wolff.  My daughter informed me yesterday that the "Heinz Wolff" is on its way back.  Can just picture her informing her friends that her Dad grew a full Heinz Wolff in lockdown to blank stares all round.

Tony, could you sort out the Golden leaver on Sky.  It seems to be working really well until the final table then someone just flicks it the other way as soon as we get to the last 6.

PS Glad to see you back.

Can someone flick a lever to actually get me to the last 6? I'll take it from there.
