Discerning followers of the beautiful game with access to dodgy streams might like to follow Arsenal's pre-season game at 6pm this evening.
Morning Ralph.
Ignoring the result (it was a friendly, or a "test" as King Arteta called it) what was your assessment of Gyokeres? And did young Max Dowman feature at all? He seems quite something for a 15 year old.

cant wait for this weekend with the footy starting
will be looking out for QPR having grown up in the bush , used to go all the homes when they had the plastic pitch and a half decent team
but the main course is next weekend when the pool start again
might start a footy thread for the season , seeing as we have a few more people posting recently. might just leave it to the united thread which should be fun this season

Wagwan bagel bloke.
Whereabouts in Shepherds Bush? I was very familiar with the area between Goldhawk Road & Uxbridge Road back in the day & despite being a Brentford fan, I had many happy afternoons at Loftus Road. They had some tremendously entertaining players over the years, including Rodney Marsh, Stan Bowles, Terry Venables (this was after his headline years at Chelsea & Spurs) & my personal favourite, Don Givens.
Do please start a football thread or two, you never know, we might yet rev blonde up a bit.
Anyway, above all that, this might just be THE best line ever seen on this Diary....

The second "mystery Man" was Dani (Danny?) aka "Yogi-Bear". Is, or was, a member here, quite a prolific Posted in his day, but he's not graced these threads for 13 years now.
He was, at the time - & maybe even now? - the best TD in the UK in my opinion.
I first recall encountering him when he was TD at Blackpool.
We were playing a big comp there in around 2005, boo was there too, & a really weird thing went off.
We were an hour into the comp when a big hand went off on my table, & two players BOTH tables the A high flush - both of them had the A of Spades in their hand. ooh-er. Floor were called, Yogi comes across & checks the deck. It contains 17 (SEVENTEEN) Spades.
First mystery was how it took an hour before anyone had realised there were 4 dupes in the pack. And then we all start realising that, yeah, we HAD seen a lot of spade flushes.
So it all kicks off, & 3 players in particular are screaming blue murder. I mean they did have a point, and it is the Casino's responsibility, but what can you do at that stage? One fine upstanding Gentleman, a resident of Liverpool, went apeshit, "I'm gonna complain the the Gaming Board" da de da. At this stage though you can't deconstruct/reconstruct the chip stacks, folks have moved tables, lost what they've won & so on.
Anyway, everyone is hollering & hooting, & Yogi had this technique where he almost whispers, never raises his voice, but he has that air of authority, & everyone listens. He's a sort of UK Jack Effel. (Take that how you like but I'm an Effel fanboy). And he just defuses the situation calmly & play goes on.
18 months later he leaves Grosvenor & polls up at DTD as their Chief TD where he does a terrific job.
Soon, due to work commitments, I pretty much quit playing the UK Live poker scene & lose touch with him., only to bump into him at Goliath last week.
Apparently he rides two bikes these days, working for both DTD at their Live Events, &, it would appear, working as & when for Grosvenor too.
EDIT - just found this 18 (?) year old video of Yogi at the opening night of DTD. He's put a bit of timber on since then.

Morning Tony,
I like the look of Gyokeres, he's a big strong physical presence and clearly still getting up to speed fitness-wise. I think he'll be fine.
Max Dowman came on after about an hour and absolutely dazzled once again with his pace and trickery. He's astonishing for a 15-y-o playing against top class opposition and won us a penalty which made the score a little more palatable. He definitely deserves to be in the first team squad for our opening game next Sunday.

Would he really dare play a 15 year old against Man U? More likely just "bench" for experience maybe?

Gyokeres? Too early to be sure.
But he is 27. And at 25 was playing for, er, Coventry. Gives me no pleasure to say this (I lie) but you appear to have spent £200 million in this Window replacing pretty much like-for-like. Although, to be fair, a little less rape-y.
Dowman? For a 15-yr-old, he looks incredible. Quite possibly your best player while you were being humiliated v Spurs. But he's a 3 years younger Mikey Moore. Who, in 3 years time, could be a truly wonderful player. But not yet.

Up there with the best TV Series I've ever watched, with terrific performances by Kano (Sully), who is easily my favourite, Ashley Walters (Dushane), Jasmine Jobson (Jaq), Dave (Modie) & Bashy (Jermaine). Guess we'd best not pass comment Michael Ward (Jamie) at the moment.

Whilst I've got your eye boo, Liverpool going to romp it again this season?
They've added some terrific quality to the squad, though sometimes too much is too much.
I heard today that Nunez is definitely on his bike & it looks like Harvey Elliott too. Hope the latter stays in the UK, love watching him.

Not sure.A complete overhaul of the squad means they will have to hit the ground running.Still look a bit thin at CB.

uxbridge and goldhawk ha. my ends.
i lived just off askew road which you must know well by the sound of it . used to go to sulgrave boys club tuesday and thursday nights , 2 full size snooker tables , pool table , arcade games , counter selling chocolate and microwaved pies. five a side gym on top floor , most popular game was "blazers in the dark" which was normally 20 odd teenagers , 2 footballs , lights turned out which was pitch black , and if and when you felt the ball, boot it as hard and low as possible . copped one where it hurts which still makes me wince.
if they published an alumni it would be interesting
think their most famous 3 old boys are a genuinely famous uk singer who was the front man of a massive band , an armed robber who got 18 years for a unique case that was a first in uk legal history (was always a very nasty bully, made the blokes in top boy look like angels) , and a good mate of mine who i spent a lot of time in detention with, who scored in the FA cup final and got a winners medal...

Ahh yes, I'd forgotten "ends".
And yes, knew Askew Road very well, & that whole triangle bounded by Askew, Goldhawk & Uxbridge Roads, I sort of lived there on & off with step-grandparents when I was between parents so to speak. It was a "poor area" at the time but much of it has been gentrified now.
Grandad was a Chelsea fan, so we used to walk through Ravenscourt Park to attend games at Stamford Bridge.
PS - what a tease you are telling us about those 3 blokes but not their names.

i was on st elmo road which were pretty nice houses compared to becklow etc which ran alongside , seperated by elmo chippy at the top end of both . spent lot of time in ravenscourt park which in the early 80s had a huge adventure playground that would give parents a heart attack these days . very dangerous rope swings which were often two or three on , with quite a drop.
as for the 3 people , i knew you would ask ...
roger daltrey
gary hibberd (locked up for heathrow airport robbery , which ended up with a non jury retrial after 3 i think trials collapsed for jury members getting paid or more likely threatened) . first trial without a jury or something like that. .
eddie newton chelsea 1997 . ruud gullit manager , zola up front , vialli on the bench . remember it like yesterday even though i cant stand 99% of chelsea "fans" , not often you see your mate in a match like this.
eddie was a teachers worst nightmare . to be honest his whole class was full of lunatics , the school (cardinal vaughan) , had a streaming system , 3 tiers clever kids up top , thickos and troublemakers at the bottom. he would have definetely been expelled years before he finished if he was not so good at football. our team won the ****ing lot including national final played at craven cottage against the best northern secondary school team.
my favourite memory from that school, were the food fights in a huge canteen. one sausage flying across the room and that was it, everyone scooping up mashed potato, bowls of custard , half eaten pies and launching them all over. most of the time towards the side of the hall where all the teachers sat for lunch. fun times.
