I believe they tumbled quite early to the idea that recorded music, as a form of earning money, free downloads & all that, was dying on it's feet, but they majored on Tours - BIG Tours - & Image Rights, & are all worth a fortune I think.

The reasons the Stones went so big on touring is that, thanks to people like Andrew Loog Oldham, they made just about nothing from their early records. They couldn't be like The Beatles, and just split up and live off the proceeds of their records for ever. By touring, they got their fans to pay money directly to them, instead of the record companies.

PS I have a feeling that you are doing Charlie Watts a disservice Tony by saying that he had problems with drug-dependancy. Charlie was never really into drugs much at all, a family man from way back, a little older than the others.

Actually, Charile's story was quite funny. Yes, he was a family man - the 'quiet Stone'. Whilst all the others were partying with groupies, he'd be in bed alone, unable to sleep because his wife wasn't in the bed with him.

Come the 1980s, and The Rolling Stones quietened down. They hit their 40s and stopped drinking and doing drugs. At this point, Charlie went the other way, and got addicted to amphetamines, and then heroin. Went into rehab and got over it - I think his wife then used to go on tour with him.

Andrew nails it. I think that Andrew Oldham story adds up, he was a nasty piece of work, & a scammer I'd say, so yes, thats prob why they took the Touring Route. They have looked after their money well, (well some of them), I think, with homes all over, most of then have houses in France & America.

Strange how Managers in the Music Industry are so often crooks? The Beatles had a few themselves, who was that American geezer who fleeced them? After Epstein?

JIMMY Hotpot.

When are you going to regale us with another story in your diary, Mr Red?

Tom's been a bit under the weather for one reason or another, but he's on the up now. Coughs & colds, diarrhoea (sp?), bad chest, & then there was that tooth accident & some other stuff.

I tried to talk him into coming up to DTD this weekend, but he dedcided to give it a miss, & in fact, he's probably right. He thinks folks will laugh at his teeth problem, but I said his friends would never do that, we'd never take the piss. Or to use his words, which came with a good deal of unintended slathering.....

"I thdon't thinth I'll come tho d-thee-d, folksth will thake the pith".

As if.

I once had a prop bet with a lad called John "cos I'm fat" Smith. The loser had to put Jimmy Hotpot's sock into his mouth and keep it there for 60 seconds.

Under the rules of the wager, the sock had to be completely inside the mouth and the lips had to remain closed for the entire minute.

"Cos I'm fat" lost, and when Jimmy helpfully removed his sock, it was so sweaty that it was as stiff as cardboard.

CIF barfed it out twice at around the 40 second mark before finally managing the full 60.

The Nazi Pervert who is President of the FIA, Max Mosley, got caught with his pants down, good & proper. He's not denying it - he can't - but hes suing the News of the World for "invasion of privacy". That'll solve everything.

He refuses to resign from the FIA, but F1 is a Worldwide Premium Brand, & he's a goner, for sure. But the "Team Ethic" has not occurred to him, he wants to cling on, & muddy the name of F1 & the FIA rather than pay his bill. (Team Ethic reminds me of that eejit Argie Liverpool player who got himself sent off deliberately, with no thoughts for the effect on his team of his absence. And you'd think a Pro outfit like Liverpool might have worked it out that perhaps it'd be best if the Captain - & only the Captain - dealt with "refereeing problems", but I think most Pro footballers must be thick, because it's obvious that harassing the Ref achieves precisely zilch).

So, Mosley won't resign, & is hiding in his corner, about to be tin-tacked. Half a brain & he could have negotiated a fee to go "quietly", but that's his outlook.

Anyway, & this is the point. I love elegantly done stuff, & I used to work for a guy who could give you a pay decrease, & you'd leave his Office thinking he'd doubled your salary, he was so good with words. The following letter was sent to Max Mosley this week, the week of the F1 Grand Prix in Bahrain.......

"Dear Max,

I was sorry to learn of the media stories which emerged on Sunday in the UK.

In light of the allegations, I suspect you may be deliberating on your planned attendance at the Grand Prix here in Bahrain later in the week. I therefore felt it important to convey the position of Bahrain and it's people.

Clearly of paramount importance is the success of the event for all concerned - the Kingdom of Bahrain, Formula 1, and spectators. The focus quite rightly should be on the race.

With great regret I feel that under the current circumstances, it would be inappropriate for you to be in Bahrain at this time.

I don't want to add to the difficulties in which you find yourself, but I hope you understand the position we have taken.

Yours sincerely,

Shaikh Salman Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa,
Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Bahrain."

How delicious is THAT?

Meanwhile, the oaf Mosley thinks he can hang onto his job.  I bet he probably replied, "No Princey boy my old mucker, I don't mind at all".

How on earth did one so dense & decadent get a job like that?

Respect to The Prince (or his Letter-Writing Equerry), what a stonking letter!

Now where have I come across an approach like that before....hmm...let me think.....

Now I put my arm round them, all cooey-wooey, & we gently, ever so gently, turn to face the other direction. My direction......  Ring a bell anyone?

Why should Mosley resign?..nobody else does the honourable thing anymore..Blair didn't quit..none of his ministers did...Steve McLaren had to get sacked and so did the muppets that ran Northern Rock straight into the ground...nobody accepts responsibility for anything anymore..that's what the problem is.

True. But that does not make it right. He should have resigned.

McLaren is different, he was just over-promoted - not his fault.

And now, the drug Cheat Dwayne Chanbers is a hero again, media hype follows him eveywhere. And he looks in the eyes of those he cheated without flinching. But he's a bloody cheat & a liar, & has no shame, & nobody seems bothered.

Couldn't agree more...though in McLaren's case you don't get over promoted..you don't apply for a job you can't do and if you find out you can't do it you step aside.

It is slightly worrying though that i find myself agreeing with you...It's bad enough that I agree with the guys on "Grumpy Old Men" but to now also find myself agreeing with your good self really makes me feel older than 33 Wink
