Tony, a must. Knaresborough to York on the train, do it during the day as it is mad at peak times. Still the old Semaphore signals,  single line working in parts, http://www.signalbox.org/gallery/ne/knaresborough.htm had the privalage of looking inside this box, amazing it is. then finish off with a trip around the NRM at York.

Note that signalbox has the original Mackenzie & Holland frame - very rare these days.

For those unfortunate enough not to understand these things, these are British Rail "semaphore signals", as opposed to multi-colour electric signalling.

The Red signals are "Home" signals, (do NOT Pass), the yellow signals are "distant" signals, which can be passed, but with caution, indicating or mirroring what the Home Signal in the next Block is set at. The whole basis of Railway Signalling the world over.

not sure about aberdeen but i can still speak to a manager in elgin when they need to talk to me

OMG - I never saw that! I just "lifted" it off google images, never read the words. Floppy's version does not say that, does it? I've Deleted my Post.
