BTW TK, I am still somewhat on a mission to incorporate "Barney" into rhyming slang for "trouble". Unfortunately people don't accept it off me (not even when I tell them I nicked it off someone else)
You seem like the sort of man that can get that accepted..so was rather hoping you could get that in a couple of shows.

"He got himself into real Barney with that hand", that sort of thing. Or, "If you play your hand like that you're asking for Barney"

I reckon it would really help my cause.

Barney is not slang for trouble (from Barney Rubble) - that was something made up for Ocean's 11.

'Barney' means argument and predates the Flintstones (though I couldn't tell you what the etymology is). I don't even think it is Cockney either - it's used a lot in Australia, particularly among people of Irish descent.

barney does indeed mean argument but "barney rubble"="trouble" was around long before oceans 11, it was used when i was a kid some 25 years ago.

  A kid 25 years ago???

only problem with Yorkshire for me is its not green enough

We're down in't coyle 'oyle
Where't muck slarts on't winders
We've used all us coyle up
And we're rait down't t'cinders,
But if bum bailiff comes
Ee'll nivver findus
Cos we'll be down in't coyle 'oyle
Where't muck slarts on't winders

Thanks Tom, also for that unbelievably clever Yorkshire "pudden" thing.

This deep Yorkshire dialect was most apparent to me when I was working in & around Barnsley, Wombwell, Denby Dale, Sheffield & Donny, & it's a thing of wonder.

"My coits down oyle", "gettit yussen" & such like used to (still does) fascinate me.

You is always thee or tha, yourself yussen or thessen, & "until" is "while".

"Not while snap" meaning not till brekkie/dinner whatever. "Snap" is Yorkshire but I think "snap-box" is now National.

I rung one of my "lads" one night to send him to a job the next day, & he never answered. I asked him why the next morning. "Sorry 'ol lad, I wur on t'body" he said....... It was some time before I clicked as to what "on t'body" mean't......

"'ol lad" was a term of endearment in Yorkshire, but drop down to Nottinghamshire, & everyone is "me duck". (Pronounced medook).

"baps" in Yorkshire are "cobs" in Nottingham, & "bread rolls" in London. Both bap & cob have other meanings these days I gather.

I saw The Cure on the last night of their Wembley Barnatorium stint on the Disintegration tour. I wasn't a big fan by any means although I loved that album but my brother was a fan so I agreed to go with him.

The concert was immense - sounded great, performed great, and they went on for ever. My car was on the blink so my Dad had agreed to come and collect from Wembley - he had to sit waiting for at least an hour and a half longer than anticipated as the encores just seemed to go on forever Smiley. I would probably place it in my top ten concerts attended over the last 28 years.

Was in the same venue the following night to see Simple Minds - Belfast Child tour. The contrast couldn't have been greater. They were shite. Pretentious, staged pauses on songs to allow Kerr to pose on knees and soak up crowd adulation. The closest I've ever come to wanting to vomit at a concert.

It's hard to imagine how anyone who enjoyed The Cure would like Simple Minds (Scots excepted) - your Post sum up "why" perfectly!

The line was used (and explained) in Ocean's 11 (or 12) by the 'mockney' who was responsible for nicking the giant electro-magnet thingymajig.

And by the by, I noticed Tikay used the mockney 'Lucy' a few times when, particularly given employment status, 'Sky' would make a decent (and more conventional) replacement?

Well yes! For the posh kids, like Tighty who don't get CRS (Cockney Rhyming Slang), both mean the same thing - "pocket". As in Lucy Locket or sky rocket.

CRS is extremely regional, & deriviations exist across very localised areas. Mine came from a wide area - Walthmstow, Forest Gate, Dalston, Shoreditch, Whitechapel, Hackney, Stratford, Bow. There is no definitive right or wrong with CRS, it's like poker rules, anyone who comes up with a definitive answer is skating on thin ice as they vary so.

As to "barney", I've never thought it was CRS, just general "slang" for an argument or a row. It certainly predates Oceans 11 by donkeys years. I believe it means (well, as I know it) an argument, because it's always prefixed by an "a", which "trouble" cannot be. Oddly, "trouble" is itself CRS - "trouble & strife - wife".

We also used to have "backwards" speak, which was predominantly used, for some odd reason, by traditional Butchers, but also Bookies. "Neves" was "seven", but I never quite "got" why it was used, as it was so easy to crack.

Moving a bit off-topic here, but Butchers were, & in some parts still are - very few now sadly - "Family Butchers" & were wonderful places. Sawdust on a stone floor, that rather odd smell, the Butcher with open cuts on all his fingers (I used to wince just looking at their fingers), the guy carrying in a whole side of meat on his shoulder, & always bones for the dog. We used to get bones "for the dog" & then Grandma Angell wold make a stew with them.
