As Kinboshi has shown, pikelets are flatter, thinner crumpets. A bit like a more savoury Scotch pancake.

All varieties of crumpet were referred to as pikelets in Nottingham, even in the baker's shops.

So would you have to distinguish between them when asking for them?

"Two thin pikelets and two fat pikelets please baker"

I rmember calling them pikelets when I lived in Nottingham. Never saw the thin ones so no need to distinguish.

Just thought of another good Nottingham word. My wife's family are much more "Nottingham" than mine, and they come out with this stuff all the time.

I've heard that one too, but I thought it was just one guy's personal vernacular.

Mardy, or mahdi; in a bad mood.

Mardy is quite universal.

eg: Mardy Bum - a song by Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys.

I was told once that "doing a mardy/mahdi" originates from the Mahdi of Sudan who famously performed a Nelly Melba-like retreat from the British army sometime during the 19th century.

I've read about him, he didn't do much retreating though - besiged Khartoum for almost a year before taking it (and killing General Gordon). He died the same year as he won the seige, but his independent state of Sudan lasted another 4 years before the British Empire re-invaded a few years later.
