Huge celebrations ensued in Togo, (where that?) after this man won them their first ever Olympic Medal. He snapped his paddly-thing in half after crossing the line.

This girl won my heart & admiration, too. She played with such verve, & enthusiasm, & in-yer-face gusto, but always with a smile. After busting the # 2 seeds in the first round, it all went wrong, but she's won plenty in a glittering career.

Togo is in west Africa, qualified for the last world cup. The Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor is from there.

Thanks Longy. For some reason, I thought it was in the Caribbean, near Trinidad.

Becky the Best. Well done her. Mum & Dad missed her first Gold, da de da, but managed to be there for her second Gold. Rebecca looked straight across to Mum & Dad after the win, & there were tears & smiles. Truly lovely.
A full "Civic Reception" - open-top Bus, the lot, is lined up in Mansfield when she gets home, & I might even go watch. What a terrific thing for her, for Mansfield, for Mum & Dad, & for GB.

The Target was 41 Medals, & we have 25 already in the bag. Superb!
If it continues at this rate, we may get the bow-wave "feel-good" factor post the Olympics, as we did after the '66 World Cup. More upbeat feel-good & less downbeat credit-crunch will do nicely. Morale is an amazing drug.

The Citroen 2CV (actually, "
deux chevaux vapeur
") was first mass-produced & sold 60 years ago.
Nearly 4 million of the basic saloons were produced, & over a million van versions, & adding up all the derivatives, the production run came to a staggering 9 million.
It's as ugly as sin, slow, & ponderous, but it gets the job done.

In 1996 we finished the olympics with 1 Gold medal.
Lottery money has helped a lot since then but there is an article
here
, about how the cycling in particular was turned around and how it's not just about the money.
If all our sports (or at least the boating, swimming, cycling and athletics events) are being attacked like this then we should be able to really impress in 2012.
