Yeah, Giles got a lot of stick from some people for flying off the handle about a single indefinite article being edited out of his, er, article, but those people are idiots. They don't seem to realise that he was 100% correct.

I totally agree, he was ranting because he had something to rant about - a lot of people seemed to miss that point judging from the response it got.

The hapless sub will no doubt already have been soundly thrashed and had their dictionary privileges removed.

Genius.

Prefered this one:

We'd hate that to happen to you, because you can actually write, and having "Giles Coren is a sanctimonious little twat who needs to get over himself" could be quite costly in T-shirt lettering.

Oh my goodness, it gets better & better.

I love you, too Rod.

This has made my week, it's delicious stuff. And BOTH of them have a point.

The thing is, how - or why - does this sort of stuff get into the public domain?

I've sent, & received, countless number of similar such notes. But in private.

We've seen that on blonde, too, a lot. Got a grievance? -  settle it in the back garden, not in the street, hollering at the top of your voice. If you really want to solve the problem, that is.

Anyway, never mind that, I'm off for a nap, & I'm going to dream of those two letters, & being able to express myself one 100th as well as they both can.

Because of the Internet, most of us think we can "write". Very few can, properly, or well.

The idiots' reply was pretty good as well though, I get their point too.

Their point seemingly being 'please don't send emails saying we're bad at our jobs simply because we're bad at our jobs'.

It was none of those things, he was having a go at the sub-editor's subbing skills, not them as people.

And, he's a writer, of course if he's making a complaint about something that's a big deal to him, it's going to have florid language.

It was a mistake, it was one letter & he's guilty of thinking he knew exactly why someone changed his copy. If he'd asked I'm sure he'd have got an appology. Someone has a go like that at me for a mistake I'd have chinned them.

No. Not yet.

It's not yetted into the language yet.

Setted, or betted, is not, per se, wrong. It's deliberate, & innovative. Language improvisation is what we young men do. Jen Mason is a genius at it.

Well no.

I have sympathy for both sides here, but......

It was absolutely NOT a "mistake". A letter "a" as it happens, was removed. Why? To save space? One letter? I think not. It must have been removed for a reason. It was deliberately removed. And wrongly removed. That's an error of judgement, not a "mistake".

But I agree that there was no need for such public mud-slinging, or such an over-reaction. But I'm so glad they did!

There's popular use, and there's popular misuse as well though, isn't there?

The same way as many people mispronounce the word pronunciation (without a hint of irony).

A true story I heard 2 nights ago.

The fascination was not the story itself, but the different "Rulings" everyone hypothesised.

It happened 18 months or 2 years ago, at a mainstream, Licensed, "Corporate Chain" Casino. It's not relevant which one.

First hand of a £300 Freezeout, at a Fessie.

One players is dealt

The other player is dealt (and this is NOT a typo)...

All the money flies in pre-flop, the Tens (ahem) setted.

Suddenly, someone spots the guy has two Ace of Hearts.

Ace of Hearts guy now wants the hand nullified.

Your Ruling?

The hand, by the way, "stood". Think of the angle-shooting opportunities there!

Tonight, at Luton, I shall mostly be bringing along a spare pack of cards, in my pocket.
