Very good news fom Madrid today, in that Seve Ballesteros has come through a 6 or 7 hour operation, to reduce he swelling around his brain, caused by bleeding, & remove the rest of the tumour affecting his brain.

It seems there is a possibility he may make a full recovery. Let's hope so.

In the Alan Clark Diaries, his slow, undignifying, & tortorous death from a brain tumour still sends shudders through me. What a truly awful way to die.

Please lt me be asleep when it happens. Hopefully, with clean keks on.

Or off if you've been lucky that night.

Err, yes.

The thought of "so what would my perfect last night/day/week be?" did cross my mind, but I thought it best not to go there. That's prob one for the back garden!

Oh my goodness, it gets better & better.

I love you, too Rod.

This has made my week, it's delicious stuff. And BOTH of them have a point.

The thing is, how - or why - does this sort of stuff get into the public domain?

I've sent, & received, countless number of similar such notes. But in private.

We've seen that on blonde, too, a lot. Got a grievance? -  settle it in the back garden, not in the street, hollering at the top of your voice. If you really want to solve the problem, that is.

Anyway, never mind that, I'm off for a nap, & I'm going to dream of those two letters, & being able to express myself one 100th as well as they both can.

Because of the Internet, most of us think we can "write". Very few can, properly, or well.

Or did it actually happen?

Be surprised if an email like that sent to a large paper didn't end up in a courtroom.

Regardless what anyone says, this is bullying of the highest order. Imagine being in a taxi and the driver takes a route you think is longer and you came out with a barrage like that?

Or the youth at the McDonalds counter gives you a big mac instead of a plain burger, are you entitled to rant off at them in this way? I don't think so.

Tony,

You say it wasn't a mistake because someone physically removed the "a"

Surely it is a mistake, the person proofing assumed that the inserted "a" was a grammatical error and therefore removed it, they did not understand the correct sentence.

I find it disturbing that some actually find the emails (true or not,) to be funny.

Geo

I don't think the comparisons with McDonalds is valid here. This wasn't due to slackness or 'one of those days' or something.

What I suspect vexed Giles (and would vex me in such a situation) is that he is a writer, his job is to write, and yet someone else has gone out of their way to make a point of showing that they think they can improve something he has spent time getting 'just right', when they are actually way, way, inferior, and have ruined what he's done.

Imagine you are a painter, and you spend hours getting a painting just the way you want it. Then someone else comes up and says 'you want to make this better by sticking a BMX in it' and scrawls a crappy drawing of a BMX in marker pen on the painting.

A huffy email would be the least I'd do in such a situation.

And the email was leaked from the paper's side.

Andrew,

It's not just a huffy email (if it did exist) it is vile and abusive. If it is to be believed then the author himself identifies that the person did not understand the joke and that this was the reason for the deletion. Why not just say so and ask for an apology

I also would be doubtful whether sub editors of the Times would respond in the same manner.

My main point was why anyone would find this funny. As Tikay says often enough, each to their own, I guess.

Geo - they did exist - I put the link to the paper in my post of the reply & Andrew started with the link to the first letter.

My opinion: the edit was a mistake in the way that someone assumed the author had made an arse of what he submitted. That's a mistake & in no way warranted the shitty attack on all the underlings that the author launched (especially when the 'joke' was pretty pish). I'd not have had the t-shirt saying "Giles Coren is a sanctimonious little twat who needs to get over himself", I'd have bust his nose and had a t-shirt with a picture of the sanctimonious twat bleeding. I'd also collect every cockup in his submissions for a year & slaughter him publicly for them - as he felt fit to do in his artistic rage.

Let's hope for a full recovery. Seve is a sporting legend and a true gentleman to boot. It's so sad to see him, and of course his family suffering. His was the first golf video I ever bought, not only was it full of great advice but brilliant Seve humour and charisma. Come on Seve you can do it.

Agreed. I'm afraid youngsters might not appreciate what a charismatic & talented man Seve was, on the Golf Course. He was always ayward off the tee, but had huge spirit, & nobody made more "saves" than Seve.

During his years of decline, in which he clung on to his hope & optimism to recover his lost form far too long, it was sad to see him struggle so, & become the butt of mockery, folks are so fickle these days. He became mentally fiesty & prickly, & it sort of tarnished the memory for some.

I watched him for years, the World Matchplay at Wentworth was my favourite Golf event of the year, because the Camera could watch him, undistracted by "covering the field", for round after round.

Anyways, let's just hope he gets better - & I mean properly better.

Only 41 runners for the Luton £250 last night, which I felt was a shame. Market forces speak, & although I'm happy enough to play well-structured 40 runner £250's 7 nights a week, the fact is, Cardrooms need footfall, & if more runners don't play these Events, they will soon disappear off the Schedule, Casinos are not charities, & they don't exist to satisfy my appetite for particular Events.

Many of the Luton regulars were noticeably missing, (most had good excuses), including Jim McBride, Bradders, Tighty, Compo (working), & Ding, (working late, but went to Aspers & cashed in 3rd).

Fran was interested, but went to Teeside to play with the big boys, as did Chili, who was sponsored for Teeside by Virgin. I'm seeing Chili next week, & I'm gonna beat her about the head with a wet fish, because if she regularly played the secondary circuit, the £100-£250 range, she'd turn a nice little profit, but she's not keen on travelling solo. Expect to see a bit more of her at Luton.

The atmo at Luton was quite subdued last night, too, by normal standards, not helped by the offensively loud Friday Night Cabaret, a "singer" who may well get sued under the Trades Description Act. An announcement for requests was met by Niall saying "yeah, go home", which got the biggest round of applause all night.

A welcome stranger returning was Sicilian restauranter & Premiership Loose-Goose Ambro Morreale, who almost everyone seems to call, for some reason, Ambrose. He's been home to Sicily for 3 or 4 months, & has lost a bit of weight, which he needed to. He was unwell earlier this year, & it's good to see him in better health. He made the ugliest call in memory during the Cash-Game "I need to hit runner-runner, I Call", & of course, hit, to scoop a 4 figure pot, & the table audibly gasped. Welcome back, Ambro.

The £250 attracted a few faces, but the London boys did not bother, except Tony Chapman.

Regulars included Trevor Webber, Tom Myland, Paul Ephremsen (highly-rated by some), Vince (Celtic), Dave Courtney, Mel Fowler, MDD Lynch, (out of form by his standards at the mo), Mo Muse, Claire, Keith Miller, Ambro, & Aces Sicilian.

Not so regulars included Danny Samson, Rob Garfield & Mr Wilfred, & Bernard Litman, an early exit-er.

I began on a dream Table, where I could pillage at will, & soon ran my 10k to 13k handless, but then Dave Courtney arrived, (I had a £100 L-L with him), & he cut off my supply.

Dave busted soon, though, in a very weird 3 way-coup, two players moving all-in holding 1st & 2nd nut-flush, & an eye-watering call by a rookie round the back with 2 pair, for all his stack.

The Table broke, & my chip graph turned turtle, & just gradulally, or not so gradually, sunk ever downwards. I played pretty good I thought, but my timing was awry, & I just kept making the wrong move, at the wrong time. Seemingly innocent Boards, checked to me, a stab, only to find someone's just setted or flushed.

My exit was a bit self-inflicted, as I limped rather than Raised, a Raise would have got through pre. I held A-4 of spades, it came K-2-3, 2 spades, & the BB bet out, I shoved for plenty more, & he called before my chips were in the middle. He had K-5! My fault for limping pre.

Niall announced that as the field was small, they'd try to finish it in one day, but the Final was never reached until 0400, so the Final 9 return today.

I never really saw who Finalled, but it included Celtic (24k, Blinds 1k 2k on a 45 min clock), & Paul Garnham.

I was a bit hacked I did not do better, but with one exception, I played every hand as well as I'm able, kept busy, but just lacked that bit of good fortune, or the occasional big hand, & my timing was off.

One hand to report, not involving me. In a Family Pot, limped in 7 spots, the BB then min-raised, for some odd reason, & not surprisingly, attracted 6 "priced in" Callers. The Flop came T-T-T, & Dan Samson was sat holding 8-T. AND got action. In TWO spots! It's not everyday you see flopped quads when someone only holds the bare singleton, AND gets 2 way action! But he never Finalled, despite a huge early stack.

Good luck to today's Finalists.

Next case.

Kev B - wow, that Seve CV brings back some memories, & what a glittering career he's had.

He owned the World Match-Play for several years, & was at his peak in the mid-80's, 20 odd years back.

A very special guy, & a shoe-in to any Golf Hall of Fame.

It's the Grosvenor Grand Prix next week, at Walsall.

This used to be my favorute Event of the year, 10k chips, Pot-Limit, & I never once missed qualifying for it. They changed the Format this year, in several ways, & for some reason, it lost it's appeal for me, & I never even attempted to qualify. Just me, maybe, but it seems to have lost it's glitter. They aded £25k, but raked the Prize-Pool, but on aggregate, it still has added-money. I don't know quite why, but I never fancied it this year.

I rarely get to Walsall these days, which used to be ranked # 1 or # 2 as a UK Venue, but it seeems tired & jaded these days, &, intriguingly, has not been"G-Ised" as the other premier Grosvenors have.

I took a look at the support card today, thinking maybe I could play one or two of the midweek events? This is the schedule, omitting the Main Event, which is Saturday & Sunday......

Mon, 27 Oct, No Limit Holdem. 1 rebuy or add-on 90 Minutes. £50+5

Tue, 28 Oct, 8.00pm. No Limit Holdem Freezeout. £100+10.

Wed, 29 Oct. 8.00pm. No Limit Holdem Freezeout. Reg. fee of 10% taken out of prize pool. £150.

Thu, 30 Oct. 8.00pm. No Limit Holdem Freezeout. £100+10.

Fri, 31 Oct. 8.00pm. No Limit Holdem Freezeout. £100+10

Sat, 01 Nov 8.00pm. No Limit Holdem Freezeout. £100+10

Sun, 02 Nov 8.00pm. Deepstack No Limit Holdem Freezeout. £50+5.

I think that can best be described as "lacking imaginatiion". Still, if they sell-out every night, good luck to them.

I received an offer yesterday, "I can do you a favour", to play in an upcoming Tournament which has a big Guaranteed Prize Pool.

I was offered a seat at 80% of the published buy-in value. But "mention my name when you reserve the seat please".

This seems to be an increasing trend, the we "hush now, we can get you a seat, cheap". Numerous folks have received the same offer for this particular event, & several Pros are hawking the seats around at a discount, presumably on some sort of commission.

I've not accepted the "kind offer".
