Immediately a big sporting Event finishes upon which betting takes place - a Guineas or Derby Trial for example - the breathless commentatror announces "& Hills have cut him to 16/1for this year's Derby, Ladbrokes go 12/1, Corals 14/1" or whatever.
And of course, that's all just nonsense, those prices don't exist, it's just the bookies feeding the media a line, & the dumbschmuck media buying it. Probably a few quid changes hands, too.
But The Times carried a piece yesterday which stretched credibilty a bit too far: they noted that Ladbrokes took a bet on England to beat Andorra at odds of 1/200. The bet was for £135,000. To win £675.
Say it ain't so.
Far more likely Laddies slipped the Journo £200 to say it. At least, I hope it is.

When I worked at Hills during the 1998 World Cup, one of the shops I worked in had a guy walk in one day with something like £120,000
in cash
in a couple of holdalls, wanting to put it on England to beat (I think) Colombia at something like 8/11. The manager brought him through the back to count the money whilst the bet was phoned through and accepted.
Hills then cut the odds on England, which meant every shop had to throw their coupons for the match away and Hills printed a whole new run with the new price.

I'd be disgusted if my younger sister behaved like that.
She should be ashamed of herself.

Allegedly, yeah! I think that bit was just taking the piss, to be honest.
I think as the Journo wrote it, he thought "I wonder if I can get this one through?". Then added the Scots angle as a mischievious afterthought.
By the bye, I was in Edinburgh recently (that's the educated part of Scotland), & they had a newspaper which looked remarkably like The Times, it was called "The Scotsman". Is it The Thunderer, in disguise?

That sounds like money-laundering. I assume it would not be permitted in this day & age?

There was 100k placed at
during the AC Milan- Liverpool final. Milan 3-0 up and odds of 1-100 to win the game.
I laughed very hard when Liverpool equalised.

I now know what it feels like to be Tracey. I've sat here for a good 5 minutes saying 'Hayley Wick' and trying to work out what it sounds like.
