How often? For the love of God, just tell me how often.

For Sky Multiroom you will need a fixed landline connected to both boxes, if you do not you run the risk of being charged full price for your multiroom card instead of the £10 per month.
BTW, new type LNB's use a different fixing, you may need to get an adaptor with your Octo.

Meh, as long as you connect a phoneline to your multi room box once every few months there is no issue. You don't need to have them connected permanently, the box just needs to be able to do a call back from the land line once every so often.

Even if my original box isn't connected?

How often do I need to connect, and for how long?

your original box will need to be connected as well, every now and again. If you connect the phoneline (I use an extension cord every now and again that I just plug in)...reboot the box and the first thing the box does is a call back to Sky. It's all automated and intitiated from the box these days. I ussually leave it in for about 30 minutes. Job done.

Wheres the link for this info, re- dialling out on reboot, and being automated from the box? Just wondering as it would help me out if this can be actually confirmed, rather than just made up?

I have no link for this, Sky always tells everyone to keep their boxes connected. People that work at Sky however tell me that this is the way the system works and this is confirmed by me having done it this way for over 2 years now. Sky don't phone your box, your box does a call back to Sky (which, if you think about it, makes a lot more sense.
I realise the box does a callback, but i thought they (sky) initiate the callback from there end randomly, when you reboot the box i am sure it does not go online because the online light does not come on.

If they don't get a callback once every three months you're in trouble (officially), but do it once every 2 months and everything is good.

I passed these two at the golf pitch this afternoon... struck me as odd that one of them chose to 'sleep' standing up?

you don't have to have them connected for them to work...they will work fine without you plugging them in BUT you will/could get charged if they don't get a call back regularly enough. You will get several letters complaining about it first though Smiley Essentially the call backs for multi room are just to prove that you don't have the box at your caravan in Spain or something. (It's also to update your Pay per View stuff but the "permanent connection" is to "proof" it's in the same house.)

To force a call back go into the installer menu: setting>details press 01 then select choose new install and select your way through it. it won't erase your planner or anything but will send a call back.

Yo Sov!

you can check your bill through the interactive menu or logging into Sky.com. You should only get a statement if it differs from your normal monthly payment  which tells me you surprisingly haven't ordered any porn yet.
