Nice post Kev.
We definitely got to see and experience more then any previous generation, and we have a better chance of enjoying good health for longer.
The next 50 years? I'll drink to that. (I'll get there if it kills me)
Merry Christmas.

Christmas 1914
British and German troops meeting in No man's land during the unofficial truce (British troops from the Northumberland Hussars, 7th Division, Bridoux-Rouge Banc Sector)
Though there was no official truce, about 100,000 British and German troops were involved in unofficial cessations of fighting along the length of the Western Front.[8] The first truce started on Christmas Eve, 24 December 1914, when German troops began decorating the area around their trenches in the region of Ypres, Belgium.
The Germans began by placing candles on their trenches and on Christmas trees, then continued the celebration by singing Christmas carols. The British responded by singing carols of their own. The two sides continued by shouting Christmas greetings to each other. Soon thereafter, there were excursions across No Man's Land, where small gifts were exchanged, such as food, tobacco and alcohol, and souvenirs such as buttons and hats. The artillery in the region fell silent that night. The truce also allowed a breathing spell where recently fallen soldiers could be brought back behind their lines by burial parties. Joint services were held. The fraternisation was not, however, without its risks; some soldiers were shot by opposing forces. In many sectors, the truce lasted through Christmas night, but it continued until New Year's Day in others.
Bruce Bairnsfather, who served throughout the war, wrote: "I wouldn't have missed that unique and weird Christmas Day for anything. ... I spotted a German officer, some sort of lieutenant I should think, and being a bit of a collector, I intimated to him that I had taken a fancy to some of his buttons. ... I brought out my wire clippers and, with a few deft snips, removed a couple of his buttons and put them in my pocket. I then gave him two of mine in exchange. ... The last I saw was one of my machine gunners, who was a bit of an amateur hairdresser in civil life, cutting the unnaturally long hair of a docile Boche, who was patiently kneeling on the ground whilst the automatic clippers crept up the back of his neck."
Have a happy Christmas everyone.
Enjoy your life, your peace, and your freedom.

Currently reading this:
Alex martin gave it to me at the Monte Carlo. He said it was brilliant and he was right.
BTW- I think Alex is the only one of my stakers who hasn't been paid yet. He said stars transfer would be OK but I don't know his alias.
I've PM'd him but had no reply.
If you happen to speak to him, tell him to contact me. (I hate owing money)

yes! Currently trying to work out optimal strategy that will enable me to eat as much xmas dinner as possible, without passing out in the interim.

I've decided to go down the 'No breakfast' route.
It's not too difficult owing to the fact that my daughter did a huge roast ham yesterday. We had it for tea with Mrs Red's onion relish and little potatoes. (They tasted like new potatoes, can you get new potatoes in December?)
It was bigger than my head and I spent most of last night finishing it off.

see I started my xmas dinner training yesterday and only had toast last night. I've opted for a small bowl of cereal this morning, and may force down a chocolate or two early afternoon if my arm is twisted.
Was talking to Hannah yesterday about the truce in 1914. She loves history, and wants to be a history teacher when she grows up. She was fascinated by the story, which we got chatting about when this came on the telly box yesterday. Lovely song/video.

Caution. If you're playing online and trying to make a cup of tea at the same time, don't rush to pour the water into the mug when your laptop makes that Beep Beep Beep sound.
You could end up spilling boiling water on to your stockinged foot and then have to hop back to the computer screaming only to find that you have 94os.
