Its costing £3-£4 each week in bird nuts, the great spotted woodpeckers are like machine guns.

Hen Harriers and marsh harriers are nesting between here and Bardney, they seem to come up onto the Barff hunting.

I work in a room that looks out over my back garden

Regular bird visitors these days because of the bird bath and feeders I have put up

plus an assortment of neighbourhood cats

This morning one of the larger ones struck a female blackbird pecking the grass, with its paw, and the blackbird lay on the ground, motionless

The cat looked at me through the French windows. I looked at the cat

The bird, I thought, was a goner. Inert.

I wondered what the cat was waiting for. I considered going outside

Five minutes pass. The bird has not moved. The roof of my utility room overlooking the scene is aural bedlam, birds screeching

The cat makes a tentative step towards the bird, opens its mouth and bugger me if the bird doesn't jerk its neck in the air, look round, and fly off vertically in a shower of feathers.

Never seen a blackbird play dead before.

It's amazing what you do see when you try Rich.

During a rainstorm I watched a robin pecking rapidly at the seed in a feeder and I thought, "Surely he can't shell them that fast".

I got my binoculars out and discovered that he was stuffing his beak with them, and then flying off, presumably to eat them somewhere dry.

Have you been watching the latest Springwatch series?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01js0s9/Springwatch_2012_Episode_7/

Incase you haven't, take a look at 2 stunning pieces from last nights show:

1. The mink at 28:47
2. Rabbit behaviour at 38:48

I visited Auschwitz a couple of years ago Rich. Such a moving experience.

There's so much stuff just lying where it fell, or was abandoned.

When you think about the atrocity, it seems so hard to believe that it actually happened, but when your there, it suddenly seems all too real.

Mrs Daw likes young Jack to have a good breakfast of suet balls and peanuts before he goes off to flying school.

She only brings him here to feed in the really early morning, while those boisterous teenagers are still in bed.

Unfortunately, at this time of day the sun is in totally the wrong position, which means his photograph is badly backlit there's flare in my camera lens.

Still, we can't wait for a better opportunity.  If we leave it much longer, young Jack will be tearing around with the hooligans.

A bad pic is better than no pic at all.
