Went for a bike ride yesterday, the first one of the year. ( which is a bit disconcerting considering that I'm doing a 100 miler on fathers day)

Anyway, I happened across this damsel in distress. What a beauty.

Shortly after taking this snap, I added my builder's cleavage to the vista and had a bit of a fiddle with her V8 Rolls Royce power plant.

It turned out that she was suffering from a duff fuel pump. Not surprising when you consider that it has to handle a gallon for every mile travelled and obviously a common problem because her owner was carrying a spare.

She made my day anyway.

Jesus Red you could have photoshopped the bike rack.

I have a good excuse for you to dig out a good story, It's been a while you know.  Wink

Yesterday I had my appendix whipped out and have to be still and convaless for the next week, so I need some stimulating entertainment.

Want a good story?

Have a read of Walnut Tree Farm. Alex Martin bought me a copy. He said "Here Tom, you'll enjoy this."

And I did.

I saw this on the historical photos thread. The caption said it shows shrapnel damage to the statue of liberty after the Black Tom explosion.

I've never even heard of the Black Tom explosion.

Wiki to the rescue.

Property damage from the attack was estimated at $20 million (US$ 422 million in 2013). The damage to the Statue of Liberty was estimated to be $100,000 (US$ 2,110,000 in 2013) and included the skirt and the torch.

I fitted a towbar last week, which set me to reminiscing.....

Tow couplings used to require a 2in towball. Then, sometime in the early 60s, they changed to 50mm.

Now everyone I knew had a (until then universal) 2in towball on their lorry, and they were completely flummoxed when they discovered that some couplings wouldn't fit.

No one knew what millimetres were, but it was eventually discovered that 50 of them amounted to  1: 31/32in, so the 2in ball was 1 /32nd of an inch too big.

Did we all go out and buy new towballs? Nope, we filed the old ones down by hand.

What a task. I still can't believe we did it. and all to save the equivalent of about £10.

PS- I have no idea if this post makes any sense at all.

I no longer have the ability to tell stories Kev.

Ask Tony, he knows all about it.

I work with concrete products daily, I have no interest in reading about the likes in my spare time.

Today I will mostly be going to Birmingham on the train and I will be mostly taking my bike along.

Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, you can have the pleasure of seeing me as I do it.

Blimey!

Kin reckons that there was so much interest in my train journey, it caused the server to fall over. No wonder there were no replies.

Today I went to the Travellers Times office in Birmingham to listen to to a speicial guest speaker. I have never heard of him before today, but he gave one of the best talks it has ever been my privilege to hear.

He was born in Notting Hill when it was a slum. He said it's still a slum, but now you have to be rich to live there.

He was a petty criminal and an inveterate fighter in his teens, and did his first stretch in prison before he was 20.

When things got too hot for him he moved to Edinburgh where he quickly learned that,  unlike London, when you smashed the window of an antiques shop, nothing happened. No alarms went off.

He said he robbed so many antiques shops that the police said it was the work of a highly organised gang,  when actually it was just him on a stolen girls bike with a sock on one hand so as not to leave fingerprints on the brick.

He told at least a dozen more tales like that, all involving crime,  fighting or getting a young lady pregnant in a lift.

He was such a bad influence on her that she stole £80 from her grandmother and offered to give it to him if he would stay away from her for a year. He told her to make it £100 and he would stay away for two years. She agreed.

Eventually he made good, becoming a very successful entrepreneur and founding The Big Issue.

His name is Mr John Bird.

Why did you take your bike to a conference ?

Interesting abut Mr Bird, gonna read up

Because....

A: They're digging the road up in Hinckley and the queues of traffic between me and the station stretch for miles.

B: The venue for the conference was a little way away from the station in Birmingham and it was easier and cheaper to ride my bike there rather than catch a cab.

C: I'm doing a 100 mile bike ride on father's day and I need all the training I can get.

D: It's a beautiful day.

Excellent !

Next time you're in Birmingham, take in an interesting slice of history by visiting the Back to Backs - right in the centre of town near the Hippodrome theatre. Might not be your thing but I really liked it
