A while ago I retrained Ronnie's recall command to a whistle instead of "come". Verbal commands are okay but in windy conditions often don't get heard at a distance.
The process is again similar in that you don't allow the dog to fail.
He had excellent recall to my old command so the process was - whistle (new command), wait 1 second and then "Ronnie come" (old command).
He would come back 100% of the time to his old recall so he was effectively never failing to recall to his new command. Within 4 goes he's coming back as soon as he hears the whistle knowing full well that it was a precursor for recall + the lovely treat that always comes with it.
Retraining a command can be really difficult but using this simple process it becomes easy.

I'm not in the slightest bit interested in selling my Honda Legend Coupe so long as it keeps passing it's MOT without my having to spend too much money as it still drives beautifully and I'm really rather attached to the old girl.
I believe there are now only ten of these coupes still on the road in the UK.

Absolutely right Matt but you 'get it'. You would be amazed at how many people don't. Every day I hear owners constantly calling their dog's name. It's as if they think the dog can't hear them. All they are actually doing is teaching him that he doesn't have to come when his name is called, and reassuring him that they still near by. Poppy has already progressed to sitting on command with me standing a pace or so away. I'm also in the process of teaching her to get into, out of, over or down from things when I tell her to. It's been really easy but its so worth while when you want to get your dog into a car, on to a table or over a fence. (Especially if they are as big as Ronnie). |

Strange things number plates; I can't remember what I did 2 minutes ago but I have instant recall of all the plates on the 12 cars I've owned and the 3 my Dad had from when I was 7 years old.

Only my first one. I think the future Mrs Longines named it. Cost me £1250 (I still have the receipt and the MOT certificate) in April '89 and sold it 18 months later for £1200. There was a heatwave that year, I put the roof down for the first time in September. Did about 15mpg due to the knackered carbs; the sometimes required hot starting process was to slightly unscrew the SU chambers - only way to get enough air into the mixture. "Bertie" looked just like this but with a tan roof and interior. God I loved that car. |

Carpeted the rear and fitted a bench seat from a Sunbeam along one side. It became very unbalanced with three or four in the back. I had a bright yellow ex council Moggie van with a seat in the back. The weld on the bottom of the rear panel rotted through and the entire right side flapped like a wing if i went over 40mph. We bust a rad hose one night and the cylinder head got so hot that the plug leads melted. It got us home though. The next day we replaced the hose and plug leads and it was as good as new. | Click to see full-size image. |
