Tom

You had trip Nines I beleive last night on the J-9-x flop when your opponent passed Aces I think

a) How did the betting go?

b) What made him fold do you think?

c) Would you do anything differently (depending on your answers to a) and b))?

p.s unlucky not to get paid

p.p.s sorry for interrupting the flow with poker!

It was the very first hand Rich. I'm in mid position and there's one early limper.

I find pocket nines and open for 250, a player two to my left min raises to 500, immediately the warning bell goes off "MONSTER MONSTER!!"

The blinds and the early limper get out of the way, I decide to call, it's only 250 more and I think if I catch my set I can bust him.

The flop comes J 2 9 two diamonds. I think he must see this as a fairly safe flop but one where he has to protect against flush/straight draws so I bet out for 1k knowing that if he does indeed have a monster he is very likely to come over the top.

He re-pops it for 4k and I think I have him, I didn't even consider the possibility of him passing. He dwells for a minute or two and folds aces face up.

BTW- Simon Trumper Reckons I should have just flat called the 4k. "You have to maximise situations like that"  Perhaps he's right.

I can't say for certain. I don't often get it all in on the first hand of a 10k chip comp. By the time he passed, I think I had gone into shock.

Do you think your opponent knew this?

I don't think the announcement over the tannoy helped...

And the rush to the table by just about everyone else in the card room to watch the action.

I think it was funny that Simon Trumper of hearing there was an all in first hand initially checked to see where Tikay was sitting.  Cheesy

He said something about me passing a set to his straight once at Walsall.

check-call into his monster (bound to lead), and check raise the turn (or if check check value bet the river)? (hindsight of course)

unlucky though, reckon you get paid a lot more than you don't there

hi Tom,
I will tell you why i passed.I know you are a good player.I do remember one hand we played in newcastle last year when you passed trips for a small bet when i had a st8.The thing that tipped it was the smile.Knowing you are a good player i knew that you thought you had me.I bad player smiles he might think aj is ahead. Its hard to fake a smile .I wish i had called.i would of been in bed a lot earlier(im getting over flu).I feel better now after winning the 3500 sunday afternoon on dtd and hopefully have a crack at the 300 again next month if i win some kind of entry.

One more thing Tom that turns the whole hand on its head.I see because I rerasied to 1000 you thought "monster"and it was interesting to hear Simon trumper say the same thing. This is what makes poker the game it is.It has taken me 2 days to work it out.I never raise the minimum with any hand its too obvious. You know why i raised 1000?.I forgot I had 10k in chips.I have only played a couple of games with that many chips ever.I play most games with 2000 or 3000 starting chips. It was the first hand i wasn't feeling all that and made a stupid mistake.Perception is a funny thing.

I understand what you mean Scot.

BTW- You didn't re-raise to 1000, I opened for 250 and you min-raised to 500.
