i would treat an ex squaddie the same be they a pvt or a field marshall the more respect they give me the more i give them same as anyone else inreality
oh yeah NCO stands for non commishoned officer so is anyone with rank that hasnt recieved a commishion from the queen/king
as for rank gap captian and pvt isnt tht far apart you often find pvts l/cpls and cpls with much more experiance than cpts and with that much more respect amongst the troops

Can he go further than that? when my dad was a WO11 he was offered a WO1 in germany or a commishion in england he wanted to have a WO1 in england so got out after his 22 years my brother is a WO1 now, he could get a commionion now getting his captaincy withing 18 months of his commishion and extend his service he is due to get out in about 3 years but it would mean changing his trade atm he has a trade which will earn him a good living when he gets out (accountancy) if he was to get his commishion he would go back into a pay office and lose the accountancy he has worked for and the cushy life so has knocked it back

If ex soldiers do meet in civvy street, do the ranks they once held have a bearing on their relationship/conduct etc?
What if it's a biggish rank gap, i.e private/captain?
Also, what exactly is an NCO, and how high up the ranking ladder can he climb?
To civilians this would be the equivalent of seeing one of your old school teachers in the street. What are you supposed to call them?

NCO - Non commissioned officer - lance corporal to Warrant Officer 1 Private LCPL CPL SGT COLOUR SGT WO11 WO1. There are variations i.e signaller for sigs regts, fusilier http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ or trooper forregts who originally where horseback. We also have bombadier (Cpl) for Artillery regts On attaining WO1 then there is an option to take a full commission, occassionally the offer is made to WO2. Generally when meeting in civvy street rank means nothing, however the repect is generally still there. There is a strange rule where an ex officer puts (retd) after their rank and retains their title once finished with the forces. i.e. Joe bloggs Lt Col (retd) Geo

Would pay ever come into the decision about going from NCO to commissioned? I notice that WO1 tops out at £45k whereas a Major starts at £47k.

What are you supposed to call them? tell me about it a few years back before H&S got envoled i used to teach disabilty equality awareness in the month between the end of exams and end of term to 1st year pupils at the local schools. now i had been out of school for 10 years but ran into my chemistry teacher that i used to fancy at school (only reason i got a higherin chemistry) in a school coulnt call her by her first name all day. then we went to my old school and got invited into staff room i felt like a naughty school boy

So you can call yourself Col Joe Bloggs but not Cpt Joe Bloggs?

no a wo1 getting a commision would start as a 2nd lt but would get a better rate of pay than a 2lt coming straight from sandhurst
