Saw this dead hawk while I was out today. It's about the size of a chicken. (so too big to be a kestrel) Is it a buzzard perhaps?

Can any one identify it?

buzzard, 95%. would need u to spread its wings and flip it upside down to confirm.

Yep, looks very much like a buzzard to me and the size thing means it could be little else.  Seem to be more and more of them about these days as well.

Did you know the buzzard's latin name is buteo buteo?  The Hobby (in the falcon family) is called falco subbueto, which was why the game 'subbeuteo' was called that when there was a problem with the inventor trademarking the name 'Hobby'.

Been away at work, just back in but I agree with Alex & kin (mainly due to the size). Not much that'd catch and kill a buzzard, any stories around you about Eagle Owls Red? The RSPB say that the breeding pairs in the UK are from released captive birds but there are naturalists who think that they could make it over having been displaced from the growing population on the continent. THere's been a breeding pair in Yorkshire for years, their young must have spread a fair distance my now.

No eagle owls to my knowledge Rod. I suppose poisoned carrion is the most likely culprit?
