Gripping stuff once again Tom and it still goes on to this day for many people.

Only by special people like yourself continually highlighting these atrocities will we ever have the chance to put an end to it all.

And I won't accept a reply saying you're nothing special, you are.

Geo

Agree - gripping read and you are a special person.

Thanks, I appreciate your comments, but could we please please dispense with the"special person" stuff. It's embarrassing me to death.

Anyway, all I did was flap my gums about. Any fool can do that.

And this is why I don't post in your thread very often.  You underrate yourself and are embarrassed when given the compliments you fully deserve.  Humble, but very special...like it or not.  xx

From what I remember the Drake has generally stayed around for quite a while, usually at a distance, however once the ducklings grow a bit he tends to disappear and the hen spends the last couple of months alone with the brood.

I'll keep my eye on them to see what happens.

Couldn't tell a Mallard from an Arthur Mullard me, however I'll look it up. I'll see if I can get a couple of pics over the next few days for you. I'll attempt to get some videos done once the chicks arrive as it can be great fun watching them saunter and their efforts to follow mum and their climbing exploits.

The "duck buzz" is now going about the office, and it was the talking point of the day.

Whilst we have provided the floating house which was put in after the fox incident, the hen tends to nest in one of the flower beds at the entrance, not put off in the least with the comings and goings of a busy workplace (circa 2,000 workers.)

The reception/security guys keep a stock of bird food of some sort and feed them daily and we are encouraged not to feed them our scraps of bread etc, seemingly bread isn't actually very good for them and yet it tends to be the first instict of anyone who goes to "feed the birds" The moat is set on different levels and the water is recycled around by some mechanism which feeds the water back through an underwater pump at the highest level.

To allow the chicks to get back up the levels they have even arranged a gangplank system.

I was curious as to the early arrival as I too thought this more likely if we had been unusually mild.

Mallard breeding.

I was quite surprised by that Wiki answer on Mallard breeding.

I had always understood that Mallards were THE most promiscious of all duck species. So much so, that they will breed, or TRY to breed, with almost any other duck. Or any other anything. They are, or I thought they are, famous for it. (Unlike Swans & Albatross which are famously monogomous).

As a result, Cross-Breeding by Mallards has endangered scores of duck species right across the world, because Hybrid species are emerging so often now.. (Mallards are present & abundant on all Continents).

Am I talking out of my arse?

I've been looking since and opinion seems to vary wildly. Have a google and report back.
