I wish it was the decline of the dreaded sparrow hawk.

I was walking along the carr dyke last week and saw a sparrow hawk trying to catch a kingfisher, luckily
i startled the hawk and Mr kingfisher survived.

Ah, but you've sealed the fate of poor Mr Minnow and Mr Stickleback now.

Yeah, but there is an awful lot more minnows and sticklebacks than there is kingfishers.

By the way, Tawny owls have just returned to my nest box, make some interesting viewing again.

Poker updates with some hands dr Mccreadyments.

Wouldn't you rather talk about how amazing it is to have witnessed the decline of the house sparrow and the rise of the buzzard.

RedDogs life pwns poker imo

You have a man who appreciates everything he see's every time he leaves the house. Im jealous of this.

One million times more interesting than anything poker related.

Thank you Stu.

There's so much going on in the world, and time goes by so quickly. I try to notice as much as possible, I'm scared of missing something.

That's true Mr T, but then again, sparrow hawks are a bit thin on the ground too.

Keep us posted on the owls.

What Mr Hopkin said would, I imagine, strike a chord with most of us.

Its not just the way you view things Tom, its your seemingly effortless way of making us feel like we were there.

Forget poker completely. Your musings needs publishing sooner rather than later. I'm no Dickens but read a great deal ,and can assure you there are very few successful journalists in your league.

Please post more.

As for The Owls. They are unfortunately still struggling to reside in their natural 'Premiership' habitat. A creature of such stature, with the public adoration they have, should be flying high. Alas they aren't. However, we continue to travel the length and breadth of the nation to observe them. You are still welcome to join us one day. Its isn't ornothology in the truest sense of the word though and probably much less fun.

If you can do that, you must be pretty observant yourself Mr T. You're lucky to be a season ticket holder.

I'm surprised you have so many different types of owl nesting in your neck of the woods though. I would have thought that  most of the time, the Lincolnshire weather would be too wet to woo.

Talking of our time spent on the planet, I bet there aren't many who have done as much with it and can leave a legacy like this: Sir James Black, the modest genius who saved the lives of millions http://bit.ly/baKPzp

Yes Kin. I listened to his obit along with that of Harry Carpenter and several other notables on Radio 4's excellent programme "Last Words"

Give it a try. You never know, you might even become a Radio 4 convert.

Great thread Byron.

If I was being super critical, I'd say it was slightly lacking in owls.

Most of the moles have moved on to pastures new.

I think moles are thrill seekers (Why else would they torment a man with who has 20 bottles of propane and a box of matches?) When they realised that I wasn't going to try to kill them, they just got bored and left.

It's all very well buying a fancy schmancy lawnmower, but if like me you are teetering on the edge of senility, and you put said mower away without turning off the ignition, don't think you can just get your jump leads out and start it like you used to do with the old one.... Oh no, that would be too simple.

On this baby, before you can access the dinky, arty-farty little battery, you have to remove the entire front valance, and to do that you need two different sized extended sockets and a Phillips screwdriver.
