More correctly, the caption would read path the ball would have taken if gravity hadn't taken over and there was no air.

Friction with the air would slow the ball down both in terms of its actual speed before eventually coming to a stop, and its rotational speed meaning the angle of the spiral would be less and less acute.

Without air, it wouldn't curve at all.
