Hi Tom I took this photo a couple of weeks ago and have been meaning to post. Sorry for the quality, pic was taken on phone.

There are 3 fields next to each other close to where I live and they all look like this.

I've only just seen this Andrew. What a beautiful scene.

Since we stopped using weed killer willy nilly the wild flowers have really made a comeback, along with all the attendant wick things.

There were complaints about this particular group of  fields 2 years ago as the land owner had left them overgrow after planting some grain of some sorts. The outcome was loads of rats. You could hardly drive past these fields without running them over. The local authority made the land owner turn the fields and since then we get these cracking fields of poppies.

Poppies are weeds and need exterminating

So. It's a weed. What does that mean, and why does it need exterminating?

What's the difference between a poppy and a carnation?

If they were exterminated we would lose our biggest source of opiates, including morphine, codeine, etc. Remember that the next time you break your leg, or get toothache.....

Amazing stuff, Tom, well done.

Could you have even attempted that pre-diet?

And at your age, too. Extraordinary.

In June 2009 my dad passed away. The following year I decided I would spend one day in June doing something that was enjoyable, but also required a bit of physical effort. So on fathers day last year, I rode my bike 100 miles to visit his grave.

My son-in-law and my nephew accompanied me. We had a great day, and it was hugely therapeutic to spend the day doing something in my dad's memory.

This year, I decided to do the Yorkshire peaks. Shortly after that, Lee announced that he was going to do it. I decided not to say anything about my plans because Lee was doing it for charity and I thought everyone's attention should be on his effort.

On Saturday, my nephew Tracy and I drove the 150+ miles to Horton-in-Ribblesdale in the the Yorkshire Dales. On the way we stopped at a Morrisons supermarket on the way to buy provisions. I got a cooked meat feast pizza, two steak slices, two sealed packs of mixed fruit, two croissants, a tub of spicy chicken pasta, a roof-tile sized bar of chocolate, a bottle of water, a bottle of diet Coke, and a bottle of chocolate milk shake. Then we booked into a room in a village pub and tried to get some sleep.

Tracy went out like a light, but my mind, filled as it was with a whirling mix of memories of my dad and and anticipation of tomorrow, refused to switch off.

At 3:59am, I turned the alarm off before it rang and woke Tracy. We quickly did our ablutions, gathered up our bags and slipped away.

By 5:am we were sitting in my van on the car park at the starting point for the walk, listening to the rain hammering on the roof while eating croissants and meat feast pizza.

At 6am (Our deadline for starting out) we got changed into our walking clothes. Miraculously, the rain stopped while we did so. After that, it didn't stop again for 12 hours.

It started out pretty steep, and it just got steeper. Behind every crest there was always another bigger, higher crest.

I felt like Homer Simpson climbing the "Murderhorn"

On the other side of the first peak we came to the infamous "Peat Bogs" which, according to the guide books were, "Difficult to negotiate, even in good weather" When we arrived they were shrouded in thick fog ans it was pissing down. One wrong move and you were up to your Calvin Klein's in a foul black soup.

Everyone got lost trying to find their way across. Even the blokes who were guiding organised tours were looking a little bewildered.

After what seemed like several days, but was actually only a few hours, we found our way through the bogs. After that it was just a mere 1500 miles or so to the next mountain.

By the time we got to the top of peak two we were just about all in. We really should have quit at this point, but our brains were too preoccupied with pain to think clearly.

It reminds me of that time in Vegas when after we'd been up for at least 48 hours you dragged me on foot for about five miles up the strip to the fashion mall and the Apple store to sort out your dongle or summat.

Then after we got back to the room totally wasted several hours later we discovered that we hadn't needed to go after all.

Peak 3 was like trying trying to go up the down escalator. We kept climbing, but we didn't seem to get anywhere.
