Hi Tom, welcome back.
Sorry if this is a zzZ question for you Tombut I wanted to ask what you thought about Paddy Doherty? Apart from a few slips of the tongue (that have mostly come across as loveable if a bit chauvenistic) he has gone from the bad boy character that we saw on Danny Dyer's Deadliest Men to being a bit of a hero. He won Celeb BB and has done a bunch of interviews and TV appearances since which I think have made him come across in a really positive light which in turn must reflect well on Gypsies?
Just curious as to whether you'd paid it much attention and what you thought? Has there been much of a stir within the Gypsy community about him being in the public eye so much?

How many times did you have to ask Mrs Red out for a date before she said yes ?
It doesn't (Or didn't) quite work like that in my community. First of all you spend time getting to know each other while she is in the company of others, chaperoned by her sisters / brothers / girlfriends etc.
If she likes you, she will spend a little time talking to you alone in a quiet corner of a room or stand a few yards away from her friends and chat to you if it's outdoors.
Taking her out alone is for well-developed relationships and is tantamount to plighting your troth.
I asked because in Gypsy Boy he said the male always has to ask the girl out before she could even kiss him and also that the girl was "looked down" at if she said yes the first time ?
Yes. Something like that.
Just another attempt at explaining concepts to that are difficult for 'outsiders' to grasp.

I thought it was pretty simple, maybe I didn't explain it very well, surprisingly, I get that you don't do "dates".
So did she knock you back a few times or where you just too charming to refuse ?
I did think it was pretty crazy that being over 20 meant you where pretty much overhill and very likely to be a spinster, is that still the case ?

Bt and large the Gypsy community are fascinated by TV programmes about Gypsies, although, as was the case with BFGW, it is often like witnessing a slow motion car crash. They watch with horror, but are unable to turn away.
On the whole, I think Paddy did a good Job.

Gypsies still marry young, but it is my no means unusual these days to see 'older' girls getting wed.
As for getting knocked back, it's not quite as blunt as asking and being refused, it's more subtle than that, but as I say, quite difficult to explain.

Nice to be back. I needed take a step away from the forum so that I could get my head around some stuff.
It's so much easier to put things into perspective and be objective once you have some breathing room.

Over the last couple of years, in memory of my dad, I've been setting myself some little challenges, like mini versions of real adventures, and doing them on fathers day. (Longer adventures would include fathers day)
Last year I did a 100 mile bike ride, I was Lance Armstrong, and the trip from here to Barnsley was like my little Tor De France. This year I was Hannibal. I used the Yorkshire three peaks as my Alps, and my nephew Tracy as an elephant.
Next year or the year after, I'm going to turn a 50 mile stretch of canal into the Orinoco and explore it in a canoe.
Questions:
Has anyone ever done canoeing on a canal? If so, how far would an amateur expect yo travel in a day? Also, has anyone ever used one of these?

They did a version of it on Family Guy...
Have you been on a canoe/kayak (I can never remember which is which) before? You can rent them at Carsington Water for not very much and they also sell used wet suits pretty cheaply.

No. Never been in either, but I don't want to go in one of those canoes with a little hole in the top, I want an Indian dugout stylee one that I can throw my tent and my frying pan into.
PS- I don't intend getting wet....

Yeah I don't think they allow you in the ones with a hole in unless you're experienced. And I've always thought "I don't intend getting wet" but, you know, sometimes it just happens.

Might be worth having a chat with Thewy. His was different to yours, he was an (International standard) "white water" paddler, but he did it for many years, & is very much a man of the water.
He'll be available shortly after 8pm tonight.
