Speaking of maths...
...as we were, I learnt something new today.
0.999999999999999 (recurring) = 1
See now I believe you, but I don't understand it.
I've seen some of the so called proof of this but I'll always believe that 0.99999999 (recurring) will always be less than 1 by an amount that is 0.00000001 (recurring). For every nine you add to the infinite number of recurring nines, we can add another 0 to the recurring zeros but there will always be an infinitesimal difference between 0.99999999 (recurring) and 1.
yes but 0.99999999 (recurring) + 0.00000001 (recurring) is > than 1
Maybe the way I wrote it, but with an infinite numnber of 0's and 9's?

That's the easiest way - the more precise ways involve things like
which are a little harder to explain

b=0.9999999999....
10*b = 9.99999999999999....
subtract b from both sides
10*b - b = 9.99999999...... - b
but b=0.999999999........ so that means
9*b = 9
divide both sides by 9
b=1

I mean, what did Jesus have for his Christmas dinner?
He was probably celebrating the Jewish festival of Chanuka so that would mean chopped liver, chicken soup with matzah-balls, followed by salt-beef and latkes.
Ralph!
Good to hear from you.
I was thinking about you the other day and I decided that you represent all that is good about football supporters. I'm going to ditch Wednesday and adopt Arsenal as my team in honour of you.
PS- Salt beef sounds great. What are latkes?
PPS- I love salt, do you think it's really harmful?
Arsene and I are delighted to welcome you to the Arsenal Supporters Club.
I find this guy does the best Arsenal blog out there
www.arseblog.com
Latkes are fried potato pancakes and absolutely delicious when made properly, crunchy on the outside and a bit chewy inside.
I love salt too and my Dad absolutely adored the stuff. He used to go to the golf club in the afternoons and would often retire to the dining room and order a plate of chips. He used to put so much salt on that it became a bit of a spectator-sport for people at adjoining tables who were amazed at the length of time he would hold the saltcellar upside down before consuming them.
The salt finally took it's toll just before his 93rd birthday.
Subtly brilliant Mr S

Stopped the daily to and from work, getting too dangerous and was feart I'd end up killing some bugger. Still go out and about on the odd weekend.
During my time cycling to and from work I was spat on, cursed at and had a cig end flicked at me from a car passenger. Purely for cycling, I consider myself a careful cyclist, when on the road I always think of myself as being just another driver but on 2 wheels and obey the rules of the road like any motorist. Don't jump lights or get off the bike and cross with pedestrians or that kind of thing.
Came to a head one time as a car passed and the passenger leant out the window and screamed at me as they passed, merely to scare me and they moved on full of mirth.......................until they hit the red lights about 80 metres on. I pedalled like fury to get up to them before the lights changed and to my benefit it was one of those 3 junction types where they were held for a bit.
I jumped off my bike and tried to pull the door open as the arse was gonna get a thumping but he had seen me coming and had the door locked. The look of fear on his face gave me some pleasure.
And of course once the lights changed and they took off, he was soon hanging out the window again throwing back the vickies.............tough guys up here in Edinburgh

Funny you mention cycling, I have been ruminating over the idea for my next adventure to possibly be bike based. Lands End to John O Groats would be the C2C equivalent with average trips being 10-14 days.
The record was set by a guy on some fancy tricycle in 41 hours and a US Navy guy done it in a wheelchair in 8 days, wonder what Mr Fowler is doing next August/September.

I'm lucky here I suppose, mostly country lanes with traffic that passes at the same time each day. (They know I can ambush em tomorrow)
Also, my little dog rides pillion and they wouldn't dream of endangering an animal. Homicidal juggernaut drivers who would squash me like a fly are happy to wait patiently until they can pass Kizzy safely.
Loose tea? Will that push up the price of the average cuppa once you factor in wear and tear on the sieve?

I'm looking attempting a 150 mile one day round trip next fathers day.
Lands End to J O G, would you be camping out or B&Bing?

Jack will tell you that he knows I'm laughing like mad here.
During our walk when we had to use roads I often lost the rag at drivers who didn't bother to slow down when passing us, I hated it and quite often would shout "If I was a fecking horse you'd soon slow down ya **********

I would always stick to mostly camping with the odd overnight stay for proper ablutions and a good clean up, too easy doing these things when you know that in 5/6/7 hours you'll be resting up in comfort. Also means you can take in a bit more or add the odd detour when less time restricted.
It's merely a thought, am spoiled for choice whether to walk or cycle and your canoe idea also offered food for thought.
150 miles.......how long you reckon that would take you?

Yes, our Geo's definitely an anti-motorist pedestrian, at least he is on country roads if they don't slow down
