David.....
Fine Post, Sir, & your first in over a year.
Sometimes the frontispiece on older books will also have a sheet of tissue paper covering it as protection - have you ever seen that?
Yes, lots of my very old (100 years or older) books have them, & I'm still not sure of it's purpose.
You are right as to which part Barry signed - but I so wanted to use the word "frontispiece"!.
Post more, Sir, & I hope you take an occasional look at my Diary blatherage, too.
I don't write as well as Tom, but I have better taste.
Wrong on both counts.

Will do. I seem to have much more trouble finding the time and inclination to write posts than I do just keeping up with the general diversions on Blonde - including yourself and Tom's equally, um, tasteful diaries.
Similar sometimes to finding it a bit easier or just more interesting to read about poker (in whatever format) than actually going through the motions of actually playing it. Or perhaps I just need to find a more interesting regular game!

Geo - Jack.
Have ether of you ever seen the Three Men in a Boat series with Dara Ó Briain, Rory McGrath and Griff Rhys Jones?
Three men and a dog..... I keep thinking about it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Men_in_a_Boat_%28TV_Series%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Men_in_a_Boat
Plot summary
The story begins by introducing George, Harris, 'J.' (the narrator) and Montmorency, the dog. The men are spending an evening in J.'s room, smoking and discussing illnesses they fancy they suffer from. They conclude they are all suffering from 'overwork' and need a holiday. A stay in the country and a sea trip are both considered, then rejected (J. describes the bad experiences had by his brother-in-law and a friend on sea trips). Eventually, the three decide on a boating holiday, up the River Thames, from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford, during which they'll camp, notwithstanding J.'s anecdotes regarding previous mishaps with tents and camping stoves.

Never read the book but watched some of their trip (Pokerfan should watch, they tarpped up their skiff at night.) I am a fan of Dara and Griff is a British legend, however McGrath makes me want to switch off, have never taken to him.
Also watched some of their 3 men go to Ireland which was quite good.

Currently reading "Dear Fatty" by Dawn French, (I know I know!) and I've just found out what the difference between a memoir and an autobiography is.
I've abandoned Dawn French. Good story but couldn't get on with the writing style.
If Mrs Red starts a book or a film, she feels compelled to stick with it right to the end, even if it's crap. I can't do it, I just dump em and move on. (kinda like I do with women actually).

The jury is out.
The dog is the star in Mr Darlington book if I remember. Distinctive style of writing.

I didn't get as far as thinking about the actual logistics Geo, I don't know how long it would take, or how we would find a rowing boat and get it to the Thames.
It says they rowed rowed up the river from Kingston on Thames to Oxford, but I suspect it would be easier to do it the other way around.

I'm not sure I like his distinctive writing style. Narrow Dog to Carcassonne looks like going the same way as Dear Fatty.
It's a good I get my job my books from Oxfam.

Does your library look like this?
Umm, no, not exactly......
If I remember, I'll take some photos of my bookcases. Never seen such a disorganized mess, I really need to sort them out, & index them all.
