It is used for raising the nap on fabrics apparently. All credit must go to my nanna. Was thinking of taking the credit but everyone would have thought i googled it anyway.

Tell your Nan she's spot on.

I'd been told they were used for 'combing' wool.

The only time i have heard of it is when snooker players blame the white ball  veering off a straight line on the nap

Lol, tell the poor fella!

Marc -the "nap" on the carpet is the same principle as the nap on a snooker table, or the way the grass "faces" on a golf green, it's even referred to on horserace tracks, they cut the grass "into" the way the horses are racing or against.

I was just stalling while I looked for a Youtube vid showing the carding process but I couldn't find one.

Stage two- Plant your teasel in a spot that is bird-friendly and, if possible, where you can see it from a window.

Stage 3- Take a handful of black niger seed.  (Pronounced (Ny ger).

Finches love black niger, it's loaded with oil and calories. Just the thing for getting through these long, cold, energy sapping winter nights.

Stage 4- Gently pour niger on to the teasel. (Teasel heads have spines to trap the seed and little pockets that it can fall into).

Next you would set out your tame goldfinch 'call-bird' to lure the wild goldfinches in. Once they found the seed you could dispense with the services of your call-bird.

We don't have a call-bird these days, so we will have to rely on serendipity.

This is what we're hoping to see.
