I was intrigued by this bit..

Today, the black subgroup is particularly abundant in the northern part of the Eastern Grey Squirrel's range.[3][4] This is likely due to the significantly increased cold tolerance of black individuals which lose less heat than greys.

Intrigued me too, as from a thermodynamic point of view, it sounds like bollox. It can't be because of their colour, because black skin/fur will radiate more heat than grey. So I'm somewhat puzzled. Maybe the fur is denser or something?

I've drilled down to the source that is cited from. It says "studies have shown" then doesn't say which study! Terrible.

The black squirrels might absorb more heat, but otherwise it doesn't make much sense unless there are other factors like you mentioned, such as them having different fur, or maybe being larger in size to the regular greys so having a better surface/volume ratio for heat retention?

Second article said better heat retention at -10C. Absorption only relevant if surroundings hotter than you are, ie >37C. But yes, I suspect fur density is the answer. I think they are the same size as greys, from what I've read. They're not even a different species.

I know I shouldn't really, but I passed this blokes house and stopped to take a pic on my phone cam.

Any guesses as to where his interests lie?

THat reminds me Red - been meaning to post this for Tikay for ages: the old station house down at the bottom of my road has been completely renovated (ie down to the walls and re-roofed the lot) and is now a holiday let.

They did a beautiful job, but it's still right beside the railway.....

Patent wars: Stripping the iPhone bare

This is an interesting Technology article.

(Prospective geeky corries take note, this is the type of thing I'm looking for)

I think your diary has become my standard dump for comedy animal pics as I know you like that kind of stuff, just tell me if you would prefer me not to do it.

In which case, you'll probably like this. Business of patents, but you've got to love the headline:

Au contraire. The problem is getting the buggers to post on here, not getting them to stop.

BTW- Is that a very big rabbit or a very small man?
