Tell us a Scammell story, Tom.

And yes, this is MY photo.

Excellent effort.

When I was a little boy, my dad used to weigh in at Tommy Elvin's scrapyard in Wath on Derne. They had a Scammell Scarab which they used in the yard as a shunter. I was fascinated by it, and in those glorious pre health & safety days, I was often allowed to ride alongside the driver as he trundled around.

I once saw it pull 5 railway trucks filled with scrap iron across the yard because the little diesel locomotive had broken down. Those trucks must have weighed over 100 tons fully laden, but they were on rails and the shunting effect meant the Scarab only had to get the first one moving, then momentum (Or is it inertia) did the rest.

Took this outside my local, shame I didn't get the horse in the middle. The guy said he was getting it ready for a fair starting with a H maybe, used to be in Regents Park. The trailer looked immaculate but he said it and the horse were far from ready, the horse needing to get used to the brasses rattling etc.

Great pic. Thank you.

Unusual harness, black with tan trim on the collar and red kidney beaters.

The only fair I can think of behinning with an H is Horsemoden.

I tried to imagine him - feathers + Paxo and he was still a guinea fowl, NOT a turkey!

Which made me look at another persons wiki.

I shall protect the innocent by not mentioning names but you might be able to guess this from the subtle clues.

He was approached by BSkyB, for a role on the Sky Poker channel in October and was offered the role of Poker Consultant, which he accepted. He later screen-tested for an analysts role on the same show, were he was given the job as the Grandad of Sky Poker.

So on Sunday I rode my bike over to my brother Tracy's place. It's about 25m each way so that's a 50 mile training run under my belt.

Having said that, it wasn't like a proper 50 miles,  I took the roads less travelled and dawdled and gorped may way through some lovely old 'Time forgot' Leicestershire villages.

I can't begin to describe how beautiful it was. I've posted a few pictures, but you will just have to imagine the smell of the blossom, the hum of the bees, the birdsong, and the sun on your back.

When I got to Tracy's place, I found him in his usual position - under a motor bonnet.

Remember the 'A' Team from the 80s. Genius mechanics, they could fix anything, and make elaborate machines out of a pile of old scrap? Well they had nothing on these two.

Back in the day, when we were nobut striplings, Tracy had an Austin A60 Van that he used for work - play etc.

Close up, it looked something like this, but without the side windows.

The engine was a 150, 000 mile, heavy drinking, heavy smoking asthmatic old beast, that let go of it's tenuous grip on life somewhere over the Pennines in the middle of Woodhead Pass one freezing cold winter day - circa 1975.

There were no mobile phones in those days, but traffic moved at a much slower pace, and Tracy managed to flag down a passing lorry and beg a tow. (It was not unusual to ask, or be asked for assistance if you were a driver back then).

Eventually, after a relay of tows, both he and the A60 van made it home....
