Hooray!

Thanks David, you've solved a mystery that goes back almost 40 years.

Back in the day when we used to listen to 8 track cassettes, you could swap used ones in some petrol stations for a small fee.

I swapped Judge Dread for Sounds of the 70's  (Various Artists) and that song was on it.

When I first heard that line, I could have sworn that he said the word 'Gypsy' but of course, there was no way to find out.

Over the years, whenever it  came on the radio I've wondered what it is he says, then yesterday I heard it again and vowed to google the lyrics, but if course that line isn't included.

Now, whenever I hear it, I'll think of you and your dad and smile.

Do you sing Tom? If so, can other people bear to be in the vicinity when you do?

Tom will probably say he can't sing, but he can belt out a decent tune.  He has, on occasion, grabbed the mic at DTD and provided an impromptu rendition of an Elvis number Cheesy

Boshi is just trying to embarrass me because he knows how shy I am.

I take Archie & Fib for a walk to the nearby park every night at 11 o'clock or thereabouts. I wear a head torch so I can see to clear up after them. One night a few weeks ago, I kept sensing movement out of the corner of my eye. Eventually I twigged that it was earthworms disappearing back into their 'holes'(?).

Those little buggers can't half shift! I'd say roughly 4 inches of earthworm can disappear in less than a second. I'm not sure whether it's the vibration from my footsteps that gets them in a flap or the light from my head torch. I know they don't have eyes but I reckon they can probably sense light & dark somehow because when I was standing still and casting my torchlight around, they were still dive, dive, diving.

And bugger me! There must be millions of them on/in our local park. It's probably 200 x 100 yards and I'd guess on average there must be 5 or 6 visible worms in each square foot. That's around 1 million worms, visible on the surface. Heaven knows how many lazy sods were still in home with their feet up. In some areas of the park, away from the edges, hedges, trees and where kids play football, there must have been around 20 or more per square foot. Amazing!

Until tonight I'd assumed it was the wet ground after rain that brought them out partying, but we've had a fair bit of rain today and it was pretty wet, certainly wetter than some other nights when they've been in evidence. Tonight though I didn't see one solitary worm, not one - from a million to zero. I can only think it was because it was cloudless with a moon just past first quarter. Either that or the fact it may have been just a touch cooler tonight than previously.

Seriously though Jack. That's a quality post.

How come you don't write more, especially observational stuffiness that?

Thanks Tom but I posted it so someone could edumacate  me on the nocturnal habits of earthworms not for a pat on the back! So get cracking - I'm guessing you've seen all this worm nonsense before?

I'm more of a consumer of content than a creator of it across all the different social media. I've posted on average once per day during my 6½ year membership of blonde; does that not make me a chatterbox? To be honest, I'm pretty taciturn in real life too. I don't like to voice my opinions amongst unknown company. Oh, that makes it sound like I'm some sort of secretive extremist. The truth is I'm a pretty easy-going, tolerant bloke and if you ask me I'll pretty much tell you anything - in the flesh Smiley

I'm a keen amateur in private. I sing around the house and at work. I have a reasonable voice so long as I don't go too high or low but I'm never gonna set the world on fire. One of my work colleagues is a bit of a muso and in a band. He once asked me if I'd like to be the singer (I think he was being serious) but I'm far too much of a scaredy-cat to get on stage.

I did once win a karaoke competition in Yeates's Wine Lodge in Preston when on rugby tour. Elvis Presley - The Wonder of You. It was all the more surprising because I only knew the chorus and just mumbled through the verses. My only other public musical outing was also on rugby tour, this time a sing-off against our Irish referee whilst stood on chairs in the Garryowen RFC clubhouse in Co. Limerick. It's fair to say there was a modicum of drink involved in both episodes.
