What's the difference between a Buffalo and a Bison?

Northing - an American Buffalo & an American Bison are the same thing I believe.

Proper ugly buggers, too.

Serves you right. You and your big bills.

Or, as my aunt Lina used to say when someone got their comeuppance,  "That's the price of you."

Ooh, That's a great idea for a topic.

What old or unusual sayings or phrases did your family use, and what did they mean?

When my dad was driving fast down winding lanes,  (Which he always did) my Granddad, who couldn't drive and preferred to travel by horse & cart would put his foot on the dashboard, (No seatbelts in those days) clasp his trilby hat to his head with both hands, and shout, "Tek yer friggin time lad. One of these days y'll meet yersel comin the other way."

great topic:

My dad had some amazing sayings which I presume he got from his dad:

"put wood inth' ol" = (put wood in the hole) = shut the door

Then one i never understood, as a child when asking mum "whats for tea" my dad would say (i think this was it)

"a bite at the latch and a jump at the door"  - i have no idea what this means

I'm guessing that lolling had a different meaning to the one we're familiar with?

We had "Stop ramping" which meant stop playing so boisterously indoors that you risk breaking things or messing the bed up.

Yes, lolling was a sort of short version of lolloping.

It referred to not sitting up properly, poor posture, elbows on the table, that sort of stuff.

Sit up straight, dont lollop.

The modern usage of "lol" only arived with Texts, & the Internet thing.

I love that one.

My mam always answered our "What's for tea?" question with, "Anything you can catch."

Sometimes she wasn't joking.

Whereas OMG apparently dates back to WWI and is in a letter to Churchill. I think this is true rather than an urban myth, but stand to be corrected.

Not too many, but at christmas dinner Dad would say the Selkirk Grace:

Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it,
But we hae meat and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be thankit.

They say it at local sportsmen's dinners etc as well.
