I don't know if it saves money over the lifetime of ownership, but it's definitely convenient.  It holds 2-litres, but only heats enough for one cup at a time, so you're not having to keep on filling it (such a laborious task that takes hours, obviously) and as soon as it boils it disperses it into the mug with the amount you preset.

That's assuming you haven't forgotten to place a mug underneath the spout...

My wife insisted on relegating our 'one-cup' to the garage on the grounds that it didn't get the water hot enough to make tea.
Hence our acquisition of the Wahl ecokettle jobby I posted about earlier.

Sounds like you might have had a dodgy one, as ours is definitely hot enough to make tea.  You don't live at the top of Mt Everest do you?

How do you know? You don't drink tea.

You do realise that the water has to be actually boiling?

I do drink tea, just not that often.  Also, it doesn't have to be boiling, it has to be at the right temperature (which I think is over 85°C or something like that).  That's why you can't make a cuppa up Everest, as the water boils at too low a temperature and doesn't get hot enough to make a brew (think it only reaches 60°C before it starts to boil).

I never drink tea (my last cup was taken c1984) so it's all the same to me.
I do however live in t'frozen north which may have an impact?
Oh and it gets much colder in our house every time I say something like "I see DTD have a tourney on next week"...

Zing!

Tom's Diary back on track.

17 pages of whether water should be on the boil when making tea, & how much water should be in the kettle, optimally.

Mind-boggling stuff. They cover the same stuff on the Womens Institute Forum I'm told.

So I'm in London at the moment. I had a nice relaxed informal meeting over dinner, and I have a tense and twitchy all day conference tomorrow, a few odds and sods at home on Saturday morning,  then, barring hiccups, I'm free in the afternoon.

On the train coming down, I had the good fortune to share a table with three rather attractive 20 something American students. We spent a pleasant 15 minutes or so comparing accents, as you do, and then moved on to more serious stuff, work, family, ambitions etc.

I was struck by how mature and savvy they were. They impressed me a great deal.

One thing in particular stood out though, and I've noticed this more and more in young ladies, especially over the last year or so. When they talk, and they come to the end of a sentence, their voice becomes a croak. Well, not a croak exactly, more of a creak, like a rusty hinge.

I don't know if I'm explaining this very well.

You know how an Australian's voice goes up a few octaves at the end of a sentence, well this is the complete opposite of that.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Yup. It is the Britney Spears croak. No, it is. Listen to Britney's early stuff, she does the croak in BOMT.
