The Guide chap takes you up little paths into the dense woodland, & then shows you evidence of where crossbills have been. They leave a sort of "trademark" when they feed due to their beak shape apparently, so once you get to the area they have been working, you soon spot them.

Must be said, as working reservoirs go, it is incredibly beautiful, & beautifully set.

There is a Hotel in the hillside, which was originally a grace & favour holiday home for the Councillors of Liverpool City Council, who, on the pretence of overseeing the workings of their reservoir, would go there for hunting trips.

The pipelines starts from that gothic-style straining tower, & run underground all the way to Liverpool. There was originally one pipeline, but I believe they added another a while back.

Conwy Castle is up that way. Went there on a school trip once.

13th Century jobbie. Cost £15,000 to build. Incredible amount of money.

I was thinking last night, we've been on this planet for ~ 7 million years and it's only during the last 50 or so that we've given any thought to taking care of it.

If we had been born a 100 years earlier, we would have been out shooting tigers, cutting down rainforests and poking holes in the ozone layer with the best of them.



When I was a young man I used to buy tons of plastic coated armoured cable from Boothy's in Rotherham, take it to the nearest open space, pour a gallon of diesel on to it and set it on fire. It used to make so much black smoke it could blot out the sun, but no one batted an eyelid.

No, that was what the money was in 1751. The castle was built in the 1280s. You could probably stick a couple of noughts on it.

If we set inflation at 2% between the time Edward I was conquering Wales and the time George II was being all German (a stretch, but bear with me), that would mean £15,000 was worth

£36,261,537,125

1% nearer £320m might be a better guess.

The castle protected the Welsh loyalists from the future Henry V and those loyal to Charles I for four years.

It's pretty much impossible to calculate an equivalent price now because how our economy works is completely different.

In absolute terms the 'real' figure would probably be a lot more than £300m, but in contemporary terms then a lot of the work and content would be done by serfs which is obviously very cheap labour. At the higher level the value of the work to some of the people doing it wouldn't be related to the money they spent or received but rather to the influence they received as a result of being involved and 'helpful' (to either the aristocracy or the crown).

It's pretty safe to say that 'a lot' would cover the cost of it anyway
