The dog’s bollocks

..........who thought up that one and why while we are at it?

My old man who was a printer always told me . . . .

One use was the original Emoticon :-
In the printing industry in the 70's end of printing plates were marked with :- to signify the end of a printed area.  So the printer ran until he saw "the Dog's Bollocks".
This was associated with the end of a run or day so it moved to slang for meaning something good.

I like this explanation. I'm not sure I believe it, but I like it.

I tried to get a bit better picture of Croft quarry today to give a sense of scale.  The mist still gets in the way but you can see the big trucks and stuff at the bottom if you look carefully or zoom in.

Croft is a granite quarry btw.

I've just remembered another of my granny's sayings.

Go and play outside. Let the wind blow the stink off you.

While I was out walking yesterday I saw several of these little sort of double decker wooden boxes. They were about 10" by 6" and positioned either side of gateways.

Any ideas?

Good guess but nah...  Too obvious and open and exposed.

Are they just a general lost property box?

Say you stumble across some keys on your walk you helpfully leave them there so people know where to find them?

Probably not seeing as there's one either side of the gate but I think that's what they should be for even if they're not.

The design seems too elaborate for lost property boxes.

Do the gates lead to rights of ways ?
Not anything to do with orienteering or the like ?

The gates were on public footpaths, but I've been on hundreds of those and I've never seen boxes like these before. They all have that sort of double decker design. It must have some significance.
