Fast forward 15 years.

Now, where did I put that grommet?

So my grommet arrived and I DID collect it.

FYI in 15 years I will easily be able to to find it because it will be stored alongside my other Stihl tools and spares in my Rosie & Jim lunch box.

Questions the Internet can't or won't answer.

If I cut ONE SIDE of a conifer back past the green, WILL IT LIVE?

Note: I know that it won't go green again.

So once you cut a branch on a conifer, nothing grows there again?  I wish I could just get rid of all trees that way.  I seem to get all kinds of mini trees in my garden as we back into a whole bunch of trees that spread into my borders/lawn.  Think over time I am just coppicing them as getting them out by the roots is pretty tough, especially if they are growing inside something and I don't notice until they are 5 foot high.

Several years ago I cut down a tree that was standing in front of this conifer. The brown patch never grows or greens up but the tree is fine.

I have a row of conifers that are about 8ft wide across the top and very difficult to manage. The back side of these are not on show and could be cut back to the trunk to make them half the width but I don't want to kill the trees altogether.

BTW your self-setters are probably sycamores.

I did just read that nothing will grow back if you chop a branch off as there are no buds.  Think it would survive, but become more unstable, so more likely to topple in the future?  It might even gradually lean into the remaining branches even if it doesn't topple.  Can you not just took 2 feet off one side?   You'd probably have a lot more future work though keeping it down every year.

I've got a whole bunch of conifers along the side of my house in a neighbours garden. I had a bit of a subsidence issue and although the neighbour wouldn't take them down, we were able to cut them back pretty savagely on our side. Most survive with a decent greenery on his side. One or two are brown on his side too which I presume is a result of what we did

This is the hedge. I don't need the right hand side so I could reduce it's width by almost half.

If the right side doesn't bother you, then don't look for a job Smiley
