I just wanted to say a quick "Thank you" to you, Mr. Red. Since your "look at things properly" post a while ago I started to have a look around the house before going to bed...not to spy on the neighbours or anything ...honest guv Smiley But just to have a nice quiet moment. Spotted loads and loads of small birds in the trees next to our house (plenty of cover for them at the moment)..active little buggers they are and fly faster than any bird I've seen in a while, diving all over the place evading other birds (Big feckin' rooks in the area) and catching their food...amazing to watch, very cool.
Tsirpy little feckers as well...which is slightly annoying but OK....I can life with that.

I probably would have noticed them if you hadn't said anything but I wouldn't have seen them..if that makes any sense.

So thanks, Mr Red.

These little birds, do you ever see them land, or do they always seem to be airborne?

PS- So far, this post is a strong favourite to take 1st prize.

ok i have two things.

(for contention for second prize)

It's been wet. You may have noticed. For reasons I cannot explain even before the rain the grass front and back at my house and all over the place around me (grass verges etc) was growing at a really fast pace. This morning the mower came out, back garden first. Half the garden had been done and I needed to move said plant pot. Behind it as I lifted were three small frogs. Each were tiny, very able should I wish to do so to hold all three in the palm of my hand. Colour wise they were amazing. Half a deep green (face and underbelly) and half a middle green (back and legs). The back was mottled with dark green spots too. I had disturbed them and they scuttled off into the borders and I haven't seen them since.

Now I am nowhere near water (rivers, ponds nowhere around) so it intrigued me that they should alight in my suburban garden. Just wish I'd had the camera phone on me. I sat down with it, and waited silently but no joy.

As I was doing this (in a very rare moment enjoying the sun, the quiet and frankly considering taking the day off!) I saw something that I also had not notice before. A small bird. Blue tit Size. Bright white front and a really deep dark blue back flecked with white. It pecked across my garden scuttling here and there, its head bobbing up and down in a very pronounced style. I am off to see if I can get a picture of it online, as its not a bird I have ever seen before.

Those feckin birds dive bomb me every time I stick my head out our bedroom window!!!  Pretty sure they're cross because I stopped them building a nest at our back door again this year after the mess they made the two previous years.

this was on Sunday. picture doesn't quite do justice to the brightness of the colours, or how close we could get to it

Most remarkable was standing behind the peacock and looking at the structure of its wings from behind, with the intricate strands of feathers on the "stalks". What are they called, the white "base" of the plumage?

Laxie decides to make a run for it and get the kids to school before the birds notice, but is unsuccessful.

MrsB said one of them almost attacked her...I think they mistook her hair for their nest Wink

I reckon we're both close to where the actual nest happens to be and they're just trying to protect it.  I've seen them go on the group attack against crows which are massive in size compared to them.  Feisty little darlins', so they are.

Great Stuff Rich!

I suspect That your frogs were in fact toads.

It's not a hard and fast rule, but frogs tend to have a wet, slimy skin and they rarely stray very far from water where as toads have a dry skin and can survive quite happily without ever getting wet.

If you look carefully, you will see that frogs have long "frogman" back legs, useful for swimming but a bit cumbersome on dry land, forcing the frog to hop. Toads have short, kind of stubby back legs, no good for swimming, but much more useful for walking.
