The labour and birth

Wednesday 23rd January 2013

As stated earlier we were in the hospital from around 14:30 and have to say at this point that the nursing staff/midwives at Guernsey Hospital were absolutely fantastic throughout, never in your face but always there if we needed them.

From my view nothing much was happening (Roxanne will say different) until around 19:00 when the contractions seemed to be getting a bit stronger and closer together, Roxanne was complaining of severe back pain and by 20:30 was actually in tears from the pain so the midwife gave her a painkilling injection and this slowed the contractions right down and even allowed Roxanne to sleep for 2 x 30 minute stretches which was nice to see.

Giving birth is about the only times in my life where I have felt completely useless as all we can do as men is be there for support!

So time went on and no real action, around midnight the painkiller must have worn off as Roxanne started to complain of backache again, another 30 minutes or so and she was begging the midwife for another injection which was obviously refused and then the Filipino in Roxanne came out with those immortal words “give me another injection I will fucking PAY FOR IT”

Jokingly before we had gone in I said to her if she was going to swear then do it in Ilocano, but no she managed to use her full knowledge of the English vocabulary which was quite comical because every time she swore she would look at the midwife and apologise.

Roxanne really did have a hard time during the actual labour and at one point I don’t mind admitting I got quite emotional as I really felt for her and I just wanted to leave the room because I could not do anything for her. Obviously I didn’t and as you know Daniel made his entrance at 03:51 and all Roxanne’s pain turned to happiness at that moment, a moment that will stay with me for the rest of my days.........

From then until now...

Wednesday 23rd January 2013

As you know Roxanne has another son Cean who will be 12 next month, it transpires that when Cean was born Roxanne breast fed him and that was ALL! She never bathed him, changed a nappy nothing, her Mum and Sister did everything. So Daniel being born here is like having her 1st child and I could see the fear in her eyes as the midwives were talking to her about things.

A lot of things at home connected with childbirth and children are based on old wives tales and superstitions!! And this is what Roxanne knows.

We left hospital on the Sunday morning, the midwives having shown Roxanne (us) how to bath and change nappies, Roxanne was breastfeeding Daniel but he hadn’t really settled into proper sleeping at the hospital.

We live in one room at the hotel (ensuite) and the Hotel management and staff have been absolutely fantastic about all of this, we have borrowed one of the cots and bottle warmers from the Hotel, we have been inundated with gifts of clothes from our colleagues and my manager bought us a steriliser this is all much appreciated as we obviously don’t wish to spend that much at this present time, although we did buy a pram/car seat/buggy online half price.

Roxanne continued to breast feed Daniel but as soon as we put him in the cot he would be unhappy until he was latched on the breast again so spent Sunday and Monday night sleeping in the bed with us, it was obvious to see that Roxanne was very tired and in my opinion Daniel wasn’t getting enough milk. On Tuesday morning I put my foot down and told Roxanne we were going to put him on the bottle, we could see then he was getting enough and also I could then help with the feeds therefore giving her time to sleep.

Since this decision was made Daniel is the most contented baby we could wish for, he feeds, sleeps 2/3 hours then feeds again. Tuesday morning I gave him his 1st bath and he loves the water not a murmur from him, since then Roxanne has bathed him with no problems.

I am very aware of the fact that we have staff in rooms either side of us but can honestly say that Daniel doesn’t cry, we get a moan from him if he wakes before we are ready for his bottle or if his bum needs changing.

We have had 3 visits from the community midwives and they are happy with everything his current weight is 7lb 10oz and we have a visit later today from the Health Visitor and that should be it.

We have taken him out for a walk just one day last week in order to get his passport photo taken and the application is in......

It’s not all plain sailing!!

Wednesday 23rd January 2013

On Tuesday of last week (15th) I awake to find a few spots/rash on my shoulder and 3 or 4 spots on the right side of my face, wasn’t concerned as I put it down to maybe stress from the birth or some sort of allergy, as the day progressed a few more appeared running up my neck behind my ear, again not overly concerned and no pain although Roxanne said I should go to the Dr, I never have been one to run to the Dr at the drop of a hat and even less so here in Guernsey where we have to pay £50 for the pleasure!!

The week progressed and then like all things the pain started on Friday night, a sharp stabbing pain in the back of the neck, so on Monday morning I gave in and was in the Dr’s surgery at 08:30, one look and the Dr tells me I have SHINGLES!!

Shingles is one of those words I have heard since I was a child without really knowing what it is, now I know, the main concern was of course not me but Daniel, I explained that he was fine, I called Roxanne and she confirmed that she had chickenpox as a child and so the Dr was happy that even though Daniel had only breast fed a short time he would have got some immunity from Roxanne’s milk, the Dr signed me off for a week and explained that I was to have NO contact with Daniel and could not be in the room with him for any longer than 15 minutes at a time.

Again the Hotel management played a blinder, no questions asked moved me straight away into a room in the hotel, and luckily we are quiet at the moment as we have some major building work going on.

So that is where we are today, Daniel and Mum together in our room and me in ‘isolation’ taking 5 tablets a day for seven days!!!

But hey we have NO snow and yes the sun is shining..............
